Finally,
Just got the 79 back on the road after not only installing the surrounds but taking care of the following as well:
Jager Illumination-red LED (real cool!!!)
had pod vinyl repaired and dyed black, replaced every idiot light in the cluster, replaced intermittant potentiometer, replaced steering column bushing/bearing (see Chris Ford's site), replaced ingnition cylinder, painted the gauge cluster flat black, cleaned and polished the clear plastic cover over the gauges.
The red LED Jager Illumination is very trick! It really brings the car up to 2005 standards and doesn't look like a 60's muscle car dashboard anymore. Very easy to do, it's completely plug and play. The surrounds look even better in person than they do on Jager's website. Those 2 things alone were well worth the time, $, and effort! I polished the clear plastic about 3 times. It took me all of about 10 minutes and made a HUUUUUUGGGEEEEE difference! 25 years worth of dirt taken off as well as most of the hairline scratches. I picked up Blue Majic Plastic and Plexiglass cleaner at Autozone for about $4. Buffed it on and off with a microfiber towel. It made a difference with the first pass.
I ended up replacing the steering column bushing/bearing bedcause my Momo wheel kept rubbing against the pod. The hub no longer rubs and is located in the proper position.
All in All it was a good project. I had never been into the pod before (myself) and it was not that big of a deal. You just need to make sure to label everything, pics help.
BTW, on the LED's -the light bars are dropped in where the refletors are on the stock pod. You need to dremel out the chanels under the pod that normally carry the light from the bulbs to the reflectors. The lights plug into the light recepticles instead of the stock bulbs. Instructions from them are pretty straight forward.
If anyone plans to do the project feel free to give me a shout. Also, if anyone else has done it, I'd like to see their pics. BTW, as soon as I figure out how to take pics of the illumination, I'll post it. Have fun!!!
BTW, I tried to upload about 5 pics, all of which are too big to post here.
If anyone can let me know how to post bigger pics or upload to someone's website to post, let me know.
Thanks!!!

Ok,
I just went and set my camera on the grainiest setting I could. Hopefully these will come through. The pics look pretty bad but should give a good idea on what the surrounds look like. The last one is way crappy but gives you a good idea of the color of the illumination.

Jutin,
Thanks. It was not that difficult, just time consuming. Wating for parts, while you are in theres, you know, the usual 928 thing. Once you disassemble, you need to pry off the clear plactic face to get at the cluster that holds the gauges. I resprayed mine. The surrounds are aluminum and are a drop in. Paul Jager can send you some 3m epoxy with them. I applied it to the openings and then "dropped" in the surrounds. LED light bars are 3m taped in with just a tiny drop of epoxy to hold each one in for good measure.
If you need any pics, I've got a bunch. Any questions, PM me.
Good luck!!!

Pfunde, no change in any of the electronics. You are just replacing the 3 bulbs that illuminate the cluster with 3 leds that are installed in a diffuser. The location is different as well. The old bulbs had to shine down a channel and then reflect back up on to your gauges. With the LEDs the bulbs are installed at the bottom of your cluster and shine directly up to your gauges. The wires are fed back to the old bulb sockets. Much more efficient!!
Andrew, I haven't taken any with the car on and the idiot lights off. I will when I get a chance. The pics look alot brighter than it is. I definately is a dramatic difference over the nasty stock lighting but it's not so bright that it annoys or distracts you.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

You know I usually don't like all that extra bling ... but I have to say it kinda makes the gauges look updated a bit, like the Bozxters or Carrera Gt etc. Not bad. I love the LED lights ... will have to look into that.
