A great driver car that I've owned for eight years, but the recent purchase of a GTS leaves me with no room to store her, so time to find her a new home.
This is an all-metal custom conversion done by Newport Conversions in the early 90's based on a 1979 Porsche 928. The only fiberglass is the cover under which the manual top is stored, resulting in a solid car without body flex or squeeks/rattles.
During the time I've owned it, pretty much every major system has been renewed or replaced. Car has 157 K miles but still runs very strong and reliable. Car has no fluid leaks - period.
A short list:
New rebuilt transmission
New torque tube
Timing belt/water pump last replaced March 2004
All hoses replaced - power steering/trans cooling/engine cooling
New radiator
Complete CIS overhaul, including new injectors, new fuel regulator, new fuel accumulator - starts first time, every time.
Hydraulic lifters replaced and new cam gaskets
Engine bay completely detailed, including ceramic coated intake and many other plated parts.
Extrude honed intake and S3 hi-flow exhaust - sounds wicked.
New hood liner 6/03
New starter motor
New alternator
Headlights upgraded to 8" H5 type
New 17" alloy wheels
4 wheel alignment
Tires have 70% rear/40% front remaining - 225 front - fat 275 rears.
New custom manual top using premium Mercedes Benz canvas material - 3/04
Custom steering wheel
Jager Tip shifter
Interior cosmetics - door inserts, center console box, trim colour matched.
Pioneer tuner/CD player with 4 new matching speakers.
More.
Issues:
Exterior paint is tired but still passes the '10-foot inspection'. Several paint chips that have been touched up and a front bumper repair needs paint matching. A small ding on the metal trunk lid.
Dash pod light bulbs are burned out - recommend installing an aftermarket glow gauge system.
Dash has several cracks since original purchase - have installed a new dash cover that matches interior.
AC system has not been in service since purchase - being a droptop I've never needed AC.
Gas tank vent hose needs replaced. When tank is totally full results in gasoline odour outside of the car, but odour is gone after a few miles of driving.
No spare tire.
Windshield washer system is inoperative - once again, never needed it in SoCal so never spent time on it. The wipers work fine, though.
Here's a few pics - the top-down shots show the old phone dial wheels - the car is currently fitted with the Falken Twist wheels seen in the top-up shots.
The car is currently receiving some detail and minor service work in preparation for the sale. I will take some additional pictures soon.
The car goes to the first buyer with $8,000.
I'll be placing it in AutoTrader next week. PM me if interested.
Thanks.

As I recall $8,000 is much less than what it costs to do a convertible conversion........ which would mean this CAR IS FREE...........
But Randy how are you going to carry around the portable bar ? with the GTS it will be an open container inside the car ! same issue I have when I go to the shooting range and have no "trunk" in which to secure the machinery inside the very brown 1980.

Randy, what is the current condition of the front seats, I see you have covers on them in the top up photos...
I think this would do quite well on eBay too... if someone does not grab it here

'Ya know, just in case you change your mind, that the stepped retaining wall and grade level walk-thru could easily be converted into an extra bay with a walk-over .... nostalgia can bite ...
Great GTS BTW, even if the mirror is fubared ..

The rear seats are in very good condition except for the single bottom section, which I am in the process of rejuvinating with Leatherique oil.

Of the cab conversions I've seen, this one is the cleanest with the top up; others look very home made. Does it seal up as well as it appears to? Too bad I don't have an extra $8k burning a hole in my pocket, as well as a place to store it! Good luck!

Hey Randy... if nobody bites, would you consider parting out the engine? lol Man, that's a sweet deal. 'Course, you're doing nothing for the OB marketplace... that beast has got to be worth twice that, right? Must suck having to get into a GTS after this baby. Good luck with the sale. Wish it was to me.

Great deal.....someone will get a one of a kind ride for a bargin price! Enjoy the GTS, but the tiny sunroof is not the same as a convertible! Hmm GTS or 79 Cab....thats a tough call!
