Chuck,
All i have to say is Nakamichi Nakamichi Nakamichi. Their new CD-500 is actually awesome. 24bit D/A converter, built in amp, MP3 Cd/CDRW/.. support. And the best part, it looks stock and has no BS grahics the new stuff has, and it supports amber color which matches our interior. As far as external amp is concerned, you're in trouble there since nobody manufactures something small enough to fit in the original spot. Speakers.. MB Quart or Infinity.

Boy am I outta touch.
Found this on Ebay.

Knew Alpine had a 3 disc indash changer ages ago.
Never knew Nak made a indash 6. Not sure where one would install the
external amp module though. I like having the amp not cooking the head unit.
Anyone tried the Blaupunkt thin speakers?
Rixter won a pair at Frenzy door prize. Don't know if he had a chance to install them yet. Nice shallow install depth.

Blaupunkt San Francisco head unit. Smattering of JBL Titanium speakers.
10" sub in the sparetire well.

Something magical happened in my Durango. A rather unimpressive, plain sounding but supposed top of the line stock system sprang to life when I plugged in a DTS/DVD-Audio headunit. So, the stock 6 3/4 inch Infinity speakers where rather more capable than I ever expected. I've been trying one speaker system after another in my 928. I've heard some audio houses comment that the body cavities are such that if you want good sound in a 928, get another car. I can get what I think is good sound until I comparision listen with the Durango system and I realize how uneven the 928 sound quality remains. No amount of equalization helps fill the holes. I'm still plugging away at it.

Bill, you really should consider putting a large speaker at the lower front of the door....Adam B did this first (with the help of our pacnw stereo guru Rob Fossett) and it was simply amazing....After hearing Adams system, I had to do the same..Adam went with the Boston Acoustics 3 piece with crossover (not sure what model) and I went with the PCE310 MB Quarts (found on ebay). Less metal trimming on mine..and the sound is great now..
If you are ever up here..or if I'm down in your neck of the woods, I'll make sure to let you listen to the system...Once you hear it...I think you'll be convinced..
BTW..both Adam's and my systems look totally stock...using factory grills etc...(except Adam is running an Alpine head unit and Im running the Blaupunkt Toronto head unit).

Thanks for the idea. I'll struggle a bit more with the 4" setup up front, but I think you and Adam are probably right. The door cavity may be better tuned for that size.

If you want it to look aftermarket, go with pioneer or eclipse. For the factory look, Becker or Nakamichi all the way. I have this unit on ebay right now, e-mail me if interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=5836480268

Here are the Memphis M-Class door speakers I just put in. Not sure why the 4 inch has that weird reflection on the grill. The 2'' dome tweeters fit perfectly with the stock grill. The crossover is in the door cpmpartment. I also put the 4'' speakers in the rear quarters.

This is our solution for the sub. Firstly it make a vault out of the hatch floor so that reduces road noise cosiderably. You retain all the original equipment like the spare (except air compressor - go to smaller one) no major mods. Using a high-end sub I think is a bit of waste, because these usually need more volume than the 928 can provide.
We go with a new compact sub that gives great performance for the price, while keeping a 12" diameter.
I've retained all stock wiring for now, but changed out the speakers. Aftermarket crossovers are pretty big. I'll probably put those in for the rear mids and tweeters. For the rear kickers I've got an active crossover in the hatch area.
