928 Powder Coating
Guys I am doing my last 928 powder coating job now. We are playing HELL getting whatever coating that is Porsche put on those valve covers off. Aircraft stripper doesnt even touch it! I have spent over 6 hours beed blasting the intake and valve covers I am doing now. Since this is a hobby and I dont charge I have decided to no longer do 928 parts that are coated. If you strip them thats a different story but GOOD LUCK.

Must be an all-or-nothing issue. The original coating on my covers and intake are flaking off in sheets.
Are you saying you're still willing to powder coat parts that are already stripped?

How about the early 16V cam towers? They seam bare to me already, or is there a finish I need to remove first?

No the 16valves are a breeze. I dont even mind the 32v as long as they are stripped. It just amazes me how much trouble we are having getting this coating off. I have a HELL of a blast machine and it takes hours! Me and Rick dont take money for powder coating parts but we do like porsche parts of any kind as donations!

Even if the coating falls off, to make these parts look right don't you find you need to blast and sand them and even do some cosmetic filling since the castings are rough and pitted?

Tell me about it! Took me a full day apiece to snad blast each of my cam covers, and you already know what I found once I got the coating off. Lots of work, I wouldn't do 'em either.

On my S4 intake and cam covers, what had not fallen off already came off real easy with aircraft stripper - I guess I was lucky.

Bill, the answer is yes if i was getting paid I would take the time to do the filling work but since I am not I blast em, clean em, and powder coat them. The S4 covers are not pitted like the S covers are. S covers look HORRIBLE underneath but S4s arent that bad.

I just found right stuff to strip powder coating. Stripper is from local company who sells powder coating materials. It's specially designed to use with "weak" materials as aluminium and magnesium.
I made a test with a valve cover and used normal paintbrush to spread the stuff over area as big as a cd-rom. After half an hour waiting powder coating was quite easy to erase with a rag.
Unfortunately I don't have an official name of that stripper in my mind anymore because I only got sample bottle without any labels.
I still can call them and ask the name. I think stripper is US origin.

Nostromo - please share. A friend of mine wants to powdercoat some wheels except the local powdercoater doesn't have a setup to strip the factory coating off the wheels.

No doubt please post that. I am helping out another rennlister with some parts that were coated in the wrong color.. Can you say PAIN IN THE @SS.... I am ready to dedicate time to my own car so like Randy said. If the parts are bare metal that is one thing.. But damn the stripping.. We could have powder coated a MAC truck in the time spent stripping parts.

I sand blasted my intake and cam covers and the finish came off like butter( shame on Porsche for using such a poor coating on the engine pieces. The finished results are worth the effort!!
