Early Model (1978-84) Voltage Regulator/Alternator Info

Lightbulb Early Model (1978-84) Voltage Regulator/Alternator Info

I spent most of last week trying to find parts for my 1980 SEV/Marchal alternator after it started charging at only 11 volts. The following company has parts for all the early model (1978-1984) alternator options. From what I can determine, the 1983-84 models were equipped with a 75 Amp Bosch alternator from the factory. Also, it appears that all the replacement/remanufactured Bosch units are 90 amp.

Transpo Electronics Alternator Replacement Part Numbers:

SEV/Marchal (85 Amp)
Diodes: ISR705 & ISR701
Voltage Regulator: IS223 (Voltage Regulator only, does not include brush holder and brushes)

Paris-Rhone (90 Amp)
Diodes: IPR713
Voltage Regulator: IP2700 (includes brush holder and brushes)

Bosch (OEM is 75 Amp, replacement/remanufactured are 90 Amp)
Diodes: IBR344 (90 Amp models only)
Voltage Regulator: IB350 (includes brush holder and brushes)

The above replacement parts were 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of the OEM units, and use more recent electronics in the regulators than original.

For what it's worth, two summers ago I spent $30 on bearings, $75 on an OEM voltage regulator, plus my own time to rebuild the original SEV/Marchal unit. A year and a half later (last week), the commutator sliprings wore out. $11 more for those. Unfortunately, the replacements didn't fit correctly, so I ordered a Bosch replacement alternator for $150 due to my less than stellar mood. Fits perfect, utilizes more recent electronics. Moral of the story: If your SEV/Marchal or Paris-Rhone is giving you trouble, it'll probably be cheaper in the long run to replace it with a rebuilt Bosch. Hopefully this info might save somebody else a few headaches.

Also, I now have two (2) SEV/Marchal Voltage Regulators for sale, one OEM and one Transpo (IS223). The OEM has about 18months/15K miles on it, and the Transpo is brand new. $20/each if anybody wants them.

Not to mention a lifetime guarantee from AutoZone. BTDT, having first gone through two PR rebuilds from A-Zone that never charged right. On the final exchange, PR for Bosch, they refunded the price difference from the more expensive PR from two years earlier.

Is Autozone giving you the real 928 alternator or one from an Audi? I got one from Checker/Kragun/Shunk on a Sunday and was real happy. That is until I couldn't get the duct to go on. Seems there's an Audi unit (I could dig around on exactly which) that mounts up the same but is not the original 928 version. Did the duct go on?

I didn't get mine from Autozone, but bought it from "All Foreign Parts Co", the local Euro/Asian parts experts. The SEV/Marchal duct is different from the Bosch one, but there are four threaded holes in the rear of the Bosch housing which I presume are for the duct. I have a Bosch duct ordered, just don't have it here yet. FWIW, there was a factory note included with the Bosch alternator that specified the duct was not necessary, but could be used if desired.

Early paris/rhone units are junk.....easy update to a cheap and available delco cs series is the way to go

What model car has this "Delco CS" alternator? What needs to be done with the pully?

WELL.....Its been a lot of years since I put mine on(1990) and I never knew the GM number.BUT ...I do remember the application.Its from a 1988 camaro 2.8 v6.100 amp output.I do remember that it will need a thin spacer placed behind the upper mounting boss to correctly fill out the space.I've evened used the factory belt adjuster with it.looks stock if your just glancing down looking at the engine.You will also need a plug in for the rear.

My alternator died about a month ago. It was a 75 amp Bosch. I called up one of the outfits that always come up first when you do a web search...I ordered the 90 amp replacement and a shroud/air duct. The parts are completely different and I can see no way to make the cover fit, regardless of mods. I guess I'll send it back with the core. Price -$134.00 for alternator

Thanks for the information on the GM replacement. No doubt that will be a useful upgrade for many owners.
Does anyone have a picture of either the gasket or shroud from the Bosch alternators? I can't find any pictures that show what the bolt pattern looks like, and it sounds like others would like to know as well.

Hmmm Napa parts online lists a Bosch alternator for a replacement of the GM Delco. Anyway it's the same case configuration as Bosch or Paris Rhone...............
