Dimmer lead on OEM stereo

Was the OEM stereo hooked up in some way to the light switch? I finally got an answer from Alpine about the buttons too bright problem I'm having, and that if there's isn't a dimmer lead, I can just hook it up to 12v, but I have a feeling the display may be too dim in the day then.
There is a white connector on the OEM harness. I don't believe that was the connector for the antenna power booster, but I don't remember it being hooked up to anything. Could this be it? Anybody get this working correctly?

Hook up the Alpine dimmer lead to the ashtray light. The Alpine buttons will be bright in the day, but will dim when you turn on the head/driving/parking lights.

I have a similar problem. I've replaced the PO's stereo which was a hack job. The new head unit has a dimmer lead, but didn't see anything factory - didn't much look either... I was more interested in listening ot the tunes.
If anyone knows the lead color, that'd make a nice Saturday project.
