Does an x pipe always exclude cats or can you add cats?

If you add cats, does that mean you are now running a custom exhaust b/c of the install?

Thanks John. These guys are so picy (pun intended). I was in such a rush to send it to you that I didn't take any pics either! How about buying one of those disposable cameras, snap a pic or 2, and scan them? I'll pay for the camera!

Cheers,

I need a new exhaust and this one looks very well made, but somebody enlighten me please. What are the benefits of an x-pipe and is this the same as the Louis Ott type?

And here's another couple of pics of a just-completed Avenger system with 3.5" pipe, 2 Magnaflows, 2 into 1 merge collector made to attach to MSDS headers. High temp paint and ceramic coating will go on tomorrow.

This system has several advantages over a dual pipe design:
It's less costly to build;
It weighs less;
It has a higher mass flow rate because there are fewer bends and because there is less inner wall surface area to cause friction.

I'll post some CFD data soon to demonstrate the flow differences.

There's also a pic looking into the throat of the collector.

Enjoy,

Colin,

This X is a copy of Louie's X (with his knowledge and support). I've made some minor changes that make attaching cats easier. Louie and I are great pals and share ideas several times a week. When I showed him one of the new X-pipes during a recent visit he did a double take when he looked into the throat of the X. The joints are all smooth and nicely blended for the best gas flow.

The benefits of the X crossover design as compared to the stock H-design are improved gas flow and better scavenging of the gases in the inactive pipes. I'll have more to say later about the comparison of an X and a Y (a 2 into 1 merge collector).

You might be interested in my comments about single vs dual pipe systems.

Justin,

I bought a '79 a couple of months ago ($100). I still have to bleed and/or replace the clutch cylinder, so I haven't actually driven it yet. I put in a new battery. Engine runs fine and sounds great. I will be building a nice single pipe exhaust system for it and it will sprout a turbo too! Single pipe systems have some significant advantages over duals.

If I can believe what I was told at the DMV, the 79's are smog exempt in CA. Put in a 600 hp 5.0L turbo engine without worry or hassle! Anybody want to sell their old buggers?

Tom
Thanks for the prompt reply. You almost answered the question I almost asked! ie why not go 2 into 1 rather than crossover. I don't pretend to know anything about fluid dynamics but once the gas flows are merged surely there is no advantage in separating them again. Or is there?

Mike,

Thanks. $350 including shipping and about 15hp gain if you're just replacing the cats with the X.

Tom, what would the gains be on a single pipe system car?
