Does $ 20.000,- sound fair for complet rebuilt incl. new paint all over, interior, engine, gear, body, wirering....everything (including donor car). The reason i keep the 78 chassis is due to the car-tax-law in DK. If I would just buy the 89 s4 and run it here it would cost about $ 80.000,- in tax alone (the 89 s4 cost $ 6-7000 in germany without tax). I think it's a fair price, but maybee it can be done some where else in europe for less money.

How much of the work do you plan on doing yourself?

whats wrong with the 78 as it is? im just wondering what you will gain as you allready have close to the same bhp.
that job sounds like a lot of work to do right, my concern would be the quality of the time spent in the conversion.

There are easier ways. Just weld all the important pieces from the ob onto the new car. Nick is correct, you have pretty freaking awesome bhp on the ob.

i'll go strait to jail when/if the tax people finds out. In DK you pay car tax, 180 % (yes 180 %) of value from new minus some kind of age factor...?!?!?. But do you think the M12 engine is better than the S4 ? If I keep the 78 i'll have to spend $4k on interior, $3k on body work, $4k on total paint job, and the wirering in my 78 is horrible due to the previous owner's strange repair-job's. Also it would be nice with ABS, electric seat's, .......the new 10 speaker audio system...

No it's not better. The S4 can go much higher like n/a to say 360bhp and supercharged maybe between 550 and 1000? So you're right ... wiring is a big issue, fuse box and so-on, suspension. I really, if it were me, would find all the right parts and simply cut them out and swap. Because in the end, only an expert in 928's could know the difference. Battery box, bumpers, suspension, engine, gearbox, trim, interior, spoilers, wheels .... which will you transfer? So let's say you took the important bits:
engine
gearbox
suspension
wiring
interior
front/rear bumpers
spoilers
... and you weld them to the '78. Isn't that basically an '89? What does the expert have then, to go on? Battery box? Rear seat pivots? I think that would be all. Otherwise, your ob would BE an '89.

if it were me id customise the 78 rather than simply convert it to S4 spec. you could buy the choice upgrades from the big three and some parts from a wrecker including a 5.0 bottom end, keep the interior lite weight and it would be a cracker. then add some body kit and paint cause you have to anyway.

Hi Nick, you really started something in my mind..... Since I allready have a race licens for formula C+E gearcarts, i'm now thinking of getting a group C licens for the "super saloon Cup" here in DK. I'll rebuild my 78 to 89 spec',s and build the 89 to race spec's using my 78 engine/gearbox + diff (2.75) and strip it down to the chassis, put in raceseat + cage, I think that could be great fun.....

Sick tax laws bring out best ideas.
That is exactly what is being done by one local. Street licenced '83 Euro S already has tax free S4 internals and S4 is getting S drivetrain and wide body kit to become track car.

Bodykit is one-of designed by owner. He has scale model what is shaped like car he's trying to create and it looks really good. Car is currently under works. Should be ready by summer. Other than Jaquemond and some company in UK don't know if there are any kit makers in Europe.

AFAIK you can't upgrade a 78 to 89 completely, unless you make chagnes to the body. The '78 has different front axle setup, the battery box mounted on the transmission, and a host of other differences. You'd have to cut all kinds of stuff off the '89 to mix and match - there woudl be nothing left to make a track car out of it. And I doubt this could be done for $20, unless you do most of it yourself.
