Why do I have wheel spacers on OB?

Ok, so I've been searching the forums. Since there are so many questions and answers out there, it's hard to weed it all out and get what I'm looking for.

I've come to a rather interesting situation with my 1985 S2 that is presenting me with a challenge. I want to buy a set of wheels to fit the car and add some meat where it counts (on the ground).

Right now, I have 16x7" dish wheels with 225/50VR16 Dunlop 5000s on them. They are a standard 65mm offset as indicated on the wheel (not measured). On the rear there is a 25mm (could be 1") spacer. There is still room in the back for about a 10-15mm more as mounted currently.

I've measured the spacing dimensions to the mounting face and here they are:

Front Wheel (measured under second coil of spring from the bottom)- Front Spacing 50mm, Rear Spacing 265mm.

Rear Wheel (measured flush with inside of wheel well)- Front Spacing 121mm, Rear Spacing 262mm.

I'm thinking 17x9" in the front and 17x10" to 17x12" in the back would be about right. The problem is, I can't seem to work the numbers to find out how much offset there should be. If I'm doing it right, I'll need about 80mm of offset in the front to keep the wheel inside the fender.

HELP!

Not sure what you've got but a 21mm spacer was a common addition along with longer studs. Can present a problem when using it without the spacer. Best idea, I think, is to put on steel open lugs and then use the standard lugs as caps.

You're not going to find any 80mm offset wheels. Might rub on the coil at that point.

I don't follow the measurements you've listed. Is the 265mm between the hub face and the coil? At 9" width and 65mm offset the wheel sticks in 179mm and out 52mm. I suppose that's why fenders get rolled. With an 80mm offset there's 37mm out and 194mm in.

To get a high offset you'll need to get three-piece wheels.

BTW - I don't believe either of you cars meets OB requiements.

My '85 ROW car had a 21 mm spacer when I bought it. The 225 width tires came no where near the edges of the wheel well. I don't know the option codes for this car- they aren't specified on the trunk sticker.

Glen...thought the OB designation was for any pre-S4 car. Anyhow, I don't use the title often, just thought I'd try it on for size.

The measurement is from the coil to the hub face. My approximations (nearly exact) account for sectional width of a 255/40 17 tire as well. I know of people who have 275/40 17 in the front, and I'm fairly sure they rub.

I know people have 8-9" wheels in the front, I just can't figure out how for the life of me. There's almost no room unless you have some sort of sick offset. With only 50mm from hub to wheel well inner lip, that doesn't leave a lot of room for a wheel. On the other hand, it seems like there is plenty of room on the inside, as if there is no way the wheel or tire could contact the coil. By my calculations, the well is a little more than 12" deep. I'm not looking to put a HUGE wheel in there, but there's gotta be room for something more than 7".

Normy-- glad to know I'm not the only one. It seems to me like it might be a way to fit some other type/model's wheel in there. Like a general fitment option for Phone Dials or Dish Wheels, since just about every Porsche had them in one form or another.
