I've got a chance to buy an 86.5 AT w a salvage title pretty cheap and my son's '87 may need a replacement trans. I know the 86.5 has a different part number (.07 vs .12) but does anyone know if it's a drop-n replacement and/or what the differences are?
Right now the cars not running and probably needs some fuel components and injectors set right..body is good w small damage to the nose and the interior looks good w the exception of small cracks on the pod and smaller ones on the dash (black on black). If I buy it, I'd likely get it running and then sell it but it does become somewhat more attractive if I also have the option of swapping the AT into the '87 (would buy Constantine's TBF fix as well for the '87....need to settle that soon so I can let him know).
It's cheap enough that even if I have to part it, I'd come out ahead but I'd like to give a shot at getting it running. Any info on the AT swap?
thanks,
Jim

Looking at your CD's there are some differencees.
- Diameter of torque converter increased to 290 mm.
- Modified valve body witch slightly modified upshift and downshift program.
- Transmission case and front converter housing adapted to larger torque converter.
- Transmission protection switch against overloading brake band B 1.
- ATF temperature switch moved from ATF cooler II in front end of car to transmission.
- Only "short" final drive ratio (E) 33:13 (USA 33:15) available.
- New ATF generation DEXRON II D.
IMO none of the above is so major it would prevent swap.

If an '89 will work in my ex-86.5 then I would assume the opposite would be true. There is a difference in the kickdown and the gear selector cables between those years, so you will have to get the earlier versions. Other than that there should be no issues.

Erkka, ouch! "looking at your cd's"....ashamed to say I didn't think to look at the various transmission manuals...thank you for checking. Tiburon, good to know, sounds like it should work ok, thanks.

I think you'll be happy if you can make it work, because the '86 starts out in first gear at all times. I love my '86.5 transmission and it is one reason I love that model year.
