Default Do I buy my buddies 928 or not

I'm posting this here because I'll most likely get the responses I'm looking for

Quick summary I currently own three 944s, a decent race car, a turbo in the middle of a restoration and a Euro spec parts car (spare tub for the race car, source of the motor currently in the race car etc.)

My buddies car is an '87 928 black on black, five speed, well maintained but with high mileage.

Somebody talk me out of this.

Nothing wrong with high milage as long as the maintenance is kept up. 5sps are rare so it would not be hard to sell. Black on black are quite common however!

Sounds good... Personally, I have no problem with Blk/Blk 5 speed but in the end it will come down to an objective evaluation of price/condition.

Why are you thinking about buying it? What is the price? How good a "buddy" is he?

Al,
I would say go for it! You apparently have some experience turning your own wrenches which on the 928 as with the 944 enable you to fully appreciate and enjuoy the performance these cars have to offer.
I thoroughly enjoy all of my cars and drive each one based on what I feel like when I wake in the morning. Each is different but all have something unique to offer. If you never had a 928 and it is within your means, like I said go for it. I'm in North Jersey as well and can offer you any assistance you might need. Good luck.

Maintenance: over the last few years he's spent a small fortune on this car, all new rollers and belts, struts shocks and most recently a new radiator and power steering rack.

Price: unfortunately he's a good enough buddy where that's not really an issue

One of the things no-one asked is why he's selling: this is his fourth Porsche (the other three have the motor in the back) and he's no longer using it, meaning it's sitting in a garage collecting dust just begging to be "used"

If it was Spring and or I had an open bay in my garage I wouldn't hesitate, but if I do pick it up how much use will it get over the winter? and I hate the idea of leaving it outside in the weather.

Dave H. have I seen you around any of the NNJR events?

Ooops... since everyone seems to be of the mind that I should buy this my wife would like all your addresses to send you little "presents"

Presents from someone elses wife... tried that before and I always ended up returning it.

I would have to agree with the other folks. Buy it. Black on Black 5 speed is very cool in my book. Looks like the seller covered some high dollar maintanence. It's good that you know the owner and hopefully know some history on the car. High mileage is less concern to me than updated maintanence.

As far as not having a place to store it indoors. Rent a garage. Please don't leave it outside. And though it is winter, you should still drive it now and then. It is good to keep the blood flowing.

Al,
I haven't been to NNJR events. Been out of the loop for the last 2 years. Marraige, Divorce, work. Now that all is settled, I'm getting back into the things I enjoy, sure I'll see you around.

Being from North Jersey, I've dealt with Nunzio before... A little wine, cheese followed by espresso and grappa and you've got a friend for life.

Sounds like a good car for a good price! Also sounds like he's not in a hurry to sell it, so wait till spring (so its stays safe in the garage) then buy it! If you haven't already, take it for a nice long test drive with your friend....two things might happen....he remembers why he bought it in the first place and keeps it (not good for you) or you fall in love with it and buy it on the spot (time to rent a garage)...but you have to drive it to appreciate it!

Good advice it'll give me the time to finish the '44 turbo as well.

I did take it for a short drive once which is why waiting doesn't really appeal to me.

Sounds like I need to make a call

Buy it on the contingency that he store it until the weather is nice again. You will love the car. Sounds like you already do!
