Default for those odometers or trip meter's that don't work...

... replacing yours really isn't that big of a job. I was hesitant to rip my gauge cluster and misc. out but it only took me approximately 4 hours and everything was back to normal.

This picture is of the POS offending part - the little amber-coloured gear. That little rubber sucker had about 4 teeny-tiny stripped teeth (not the ones at the end of the gear, rather the inner ones which drive the next gear in line). Of course, to get at it you have to remove the entire instrument cluster. I was worried that the 20+ year old circuit board might not stand up to being moved but so far so good.

Anyways, just wanted to share my little success story - if you have a non-working odometer, we all know the fix is probably the gear. Well, it's really not that big of a deal to replace it with the right instructions and some patience. Gives you a whole lot more appreciation of the car!

So... how many miles have you driven it since you last bought it?

well, the last few months have been surprisingly low on the mileage, according to the car anyways! hehe

Actually, I do have a good idea on what I did put on the car - it's pretty easy to figure it out based on trends over the past year when I bought it and I keep good records... (public disclaimer for the next owner in case I ever want to upgrade to a newer model 928)!

I can definitely see however, just how easy it would be to roll-back the numbers if you feel like taking things apart even further... almost scary to think what some unscrupulous people might do (get's me just thinking about it).

I just finished that exact same procedure a couple weeks ago.

Did NOT work. I mean, it worked fine OUT of the car, but once back in...nope.

that's what I was afraid of - to get it all buttoned-back up and then to not have it work...

was your gear stripped? is it both your trip and odometer that doesn't work?

I've just done that on my Euro and it wasn't fun IMHO. 911 was much easier! For me it was weird since the gear was GONE. took a while to trace where the new one should go

I don't understand it myself, though the instructions were a little off from what my unit was like (one wheel that should have been removable seemed soldered in or something). I may have reinstalled it in the pod wrong...but I doubt it.

I did mine on my 88 and it worked for a few months then stopped again. Took it all out again, didn't really find why it stopped, put it back in and it's worked ever since.

Word of advice though that I was told, is never use the reset button for the trip meter. Not while moving anyway. Afraid to touch mine, so I let it ride.

I just did the same ting on my car. The numbers had jammed, would not move at all, thats why the gear had some teeth stripped off. I finally got them to move, but I'm concerned that it might jam again.

I got a replacement gear from rennbay. It did not line up perfectly to the existing gears however. It was somewhat offset to one side. I had to file off some material from one side, and fabricate a washer and fit to the other end to make it line up better with the other gears.

As of now, I'm in the middle of fitting the tranny to my car, so I havent tried the odo yet. I hope to get the car on the road again within 1-2 weeks (don't we all).

Most of the time if you replace your gear and the odometer still does not work, you have pieces of the old gear still in the system. If a little chunk gets lodged between the teeth of two of the other gears it will stop up the whole mess. You have to take extra care to clean any pieces of the old gear out before you put the gauge back in the cluster.

gruffalo, I purchased mine off of rennbay also but it went in perfectly with no issues... I see you and Flint both have euro's, I seem to remember reading that they needed different gears? I wonder if you could possibly have a US version?

Travis - does this make sense?

Oh, and what's the deal with the old POS rubber-like old gear - were they always that way or have they degraded to the point that they are very soft and pliable?

I have a Euro, but with a US spedometer. Or...maybe just a US faceplate..?

That WOULD be funny, now wouldn't it?
