Resto/Mod Update
Thanks for all the comments.
Brendan, yes, I will be taking off the old tar paper - in fact I will be taking the car down to bare metal in all the places I can reach (can't get in some of the channels). I'm going to fill the old antenna hole and a couple of other miscellaneous things. I'll then be use a 2 part epoxy primer before I start mounting the kit

David - I've narrowed the colors down to 2 - House of Color FBC05 - Lapis Blue Fine Metallic, or SG102 Chrome Yello. I'll try and add the color chip page, but I don't know how well it will work
I will be using the PPG system as I have learned from the web that it matters only that the system is used, and no mixing stuff up.
I have been driving around and trying to decide on what color I want as well. The car is almost down to bare metal, and I'll be filling in the holes as well.
AMG has this awesome gun metal grey black metalic. Very menacing with black metalic wheels. No mods for me on the outside though. Straight 78, no wings, spoilers, scoops, etc.

Rob,
Using the HOK paint, please realize this is ALWAYS a custom mix. Also, the prime, base coat, tint coat, clear, and pearls all affect the final product. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you do it with this, plan on a one time job, and doing any paint repairs later will be nearly impossible. Also, the cost of the materials is sky high. The painter with the skills to apply it is also hard to find and costly. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, but just prepare you for what you're in for with the HOK stuff.
If you like a chrome yellow with some depth, investigate the paint for a Acura NSX about 1999-2000 year. It's a three stage paint with base, tint, clear, but can be bought from any of the big paint houses like PPG. Although it's still a complex job, it isn't near as costly as the HOK stuff, and can be shot by almost any competent sprayer (I did it, but it's not perfect, as I've had to do repairs). The color is rich looking, and can be varied some with added applications of tint and clear.
If you really want to go wild, investigate some products called "Chameleon" paint. It will change colors based on sunlight, view angle, and color choice. I've seen a car painted with this change from a deep green color inside, to an almost violet in bright sunlight. Very costly, very hard to apply, impossible to repair....
I'll be over in your area Sunday, let me know if I can stop by.
Jeeeezzzzzzzzz.... that thing is in a bunch of pieces. Good luck!

Doc,
Thanks for the advice!! Final paint color/system has yet to be determined, so I will definitely look into the Acura PPG colors.
I looked at the Chameleons, and I like them but they are just a bit too "ricey".
If you are in the area, please feel free to swing by - just PM me and I can get you directions etc.
Not too much to see at this time though - just a whole bunch of parts and an empty shell.
If anyone else in the area ever wants to swing by and see my bucket of parts, or progress if any, just let me know - you are all welcome!

I would be real careful about putting an angle grinder anywhere, those sparkes fly into spots and later rust. Also you will go through the Gal and then get rust there. Use a stripper and then jet wash it. Also on personal taste issues do you really think vintage guages are suited to a modern car like the 928?
Best of luck.
Cheers Greg.
