I sent the guy a message using an eBay alias ID letting him know he is being watched closely for any further scam attempts by a large, rabid 928 community. The bid war attack was already very effective in letting him know he is being watched.
I think he'll move on the Chevy's. The stupider ones can be tracked down and paid a friendly visit. My CBX buddies have done this a few times with motorcycle part scams.
The fact that that Hack guy keeps popping up and seems to walk the line, escaping eBay regulation, is real disturbing. About a year ago I tried to document for eBay how this guy was using ID changes to bury bad feedback for scamming people, but I was unsuccessful in getting eBay to deal with him. Regardless, he could evade attempts to ban him by changing business (thanks to Mailboxes are US type places) and email addresses.
James, I suppose since I feel comfortable with technology (I work in computer hardware), that gives me a leg up on others who struggle a bit more or feel intimidated by the Web. Still, I didn't get comfortable with eBay without making some mistakes. It is just as Heinrich said - Buyer Beware - just like anywhere else. Because you can't see and hold the merchandise it takes some extra precautions to be safe. It's not so much stupidity but human nature that leads people to want to trust others blindly or greed that causes them to jump on offers that are too good to be true. Most people will figure out how to buy and sell safely if they are just patient and spend a lot of time watching other auctions come and go before they bid on anything significant.
