Default New stuff in the mail from Australia

Well, instead of bumming off Andy's wbo2 kit, I figured i'd get my own. I didn't get the Innovate Motorsports unit, but I got the TechEdge kit. For those of you who aren't familiar with TechEdge, they mainly started as a DIY kit (kinda like megasquirt). I've been watching the project closely for over a year, and have developed a sort of confidence for their product.

I chose the TechEdge over the Innovate unit for many reasons...

#1: From what i've heard, there is not much difference in performance. Both the Innovate unit and the TechEdge unit are above the rest.

#2: The TechEdge unit comes standard with 3 Temp inputs, and 3 User-inputs (1 of which is differential), and an RPM input.

#3: I'm a big fan of DIY and opensource projects. This isn't opensource, but its nice to be able to see all of the schematics and how everything works.

#4: It is designed to be permanently installed.

#5: It was cheaper

#6: The biggest reason - I want to be different. I don't think i've heard of anyone here running one of these units (I could be wrong though). How are any of us supposed to know what's good and what's not unless someone spends the money to try it?

ANYWAYS, here's a pic of the stuff I recieved. It got here in exactly 1 week. I was very pleased with the packaging and the presentation of the parts. I'm very anxious to get it installed - maybe Saturday if i'm lucky.

Does techedge have a regular NB output for whatever? - MOst of these controllers have the option.

It also can do internal data logging

Mike,
Does it have a MAP sensor input? If so you can get a map sensor for about $20 and log boost too?
BTW if you could, set aside some time to help Chris around Thursday I would appreciate it.

It has 3 "user inputs". I can connect anything to it that'll generate a voltage. MAP, MAF, TPS (possibly), fuel pressure, etc... These inputs are completely separate from the additional 3 temp sensor inputs as well.

No problem helping Chris... he must know my secret since he's such a good host. Just feed me and i'll work as long as needed

Well, I just got it installed. It does appear to be working how it should. I just cleaned myself up, so i'm gonna hook up the narrowband simulation and start driving around.

I've used several of the TEchEdge units in my prototype EPROM Emulators, you can also buy their stuff in kit form which also saves money.

I've been assembling one of their WBO2 units this afternoon.

Hey John,

They're great units aren't they? I actually got the special edition 2B0 which ONLY comes in pre-assembled form.

Has the following enhancements over the regular version:

Twice the program memory (16 k words).
Improved sensor drive circuitry.
Differential wideband analogue output WBlin.
One input is differential (User-3).
Duplicated RJ45 output port.
WBlin, NBsim & SVout now on screw terminal outputs.
Additional serial output for future intelligent display.
Differential thermocouple inputs.

Hi MIke,
We will be interested to hear how you get on with your TechEdge device. I use the simpler one as I am mainly after the WBO2 output to interface to my emulator board. I build both boards into a common box.

I haven't really looked at the data logging part yet

Peter at TechEdge gives very good tech support.

BTW my Euro S2 is also Prussian Blue - MY 86 was the only year it was available.

Regards

John,
I just got it all wired up and have been driving around a bit with it. So far so good... i've only got the basics hooked in (no sensors) and am trying to figure out how to get TEWBLOG working (hanging on start), but the included AFR display device (LD02) is working beautifully. I've already been making adjustments to my fuel, and will try to fine-tune it with the SMT6 later. It'd be nice to have a straight line of 12.0 and I think i've got the tools to make that happen.

I did notice some very interesting behavior from my narrowband meter (which i hooked into the NB out of the techedge unit). While it does still appear to indicate AFR, the lights are illuminating in a very strange fashion. I'll probably hook the NB out to my SMT6 instead. From what I gather, the sensor that the NB-out emulates is the SAME as what the SMT6 is calibrated for. Theoretically, I think that means the AFR i'll see on the SMT6 screen should be the same as what i'll see on the LD02 techedge display.

Since I have now used both the TechEdge and Innovate Motorsports unit, I just want to say that they're both great units. The innovate unit *may* heat the sensor faster, but i never timed it so i'm not 100% certain. Other than that, they both seem to report AFR with the same speed. I suppose the only question left may be accuracy. I specifically bought the exact same sensor for my TechEdge as the Innovate unit uses, so maybe i'll do some more comparisons @ the dyno.

I'm trying a new "tuning" method that I would like some feedback on...

Since I have the SMT6, I can do some interesting things. I basically jacked up the fuel pressure a little (notice my very rich first run), and i'm taking the fuel out again with the SMT6. The goal is to get the atomization benefits of a higher fuel pressure, and the benefit of keeping the LH from going into 100% duty cycle on the injectors (by reducing the voltage that the LH sees).

What do you think?
