So how are these re-coated gears standing up? Does it really make sense to go to the effort and expense of re-coating as opposed to just paying for a new one?

My gears are holding up very well. The expense (I've had 2 sets done) has averaged about $10 per gear (versus $100 for a new gear), so I'm happy.

Thanks, Dave. I guess what I'm wondering (and maybe you haven't used them long enough to know), is will the coating stand up through a normal timing belt change interval (40-50k or 4years) so that when you change belts, you would only need to re-coat the gears and be good to go through another change interval?

Glenn:

I don't know the answer to that question, but I was told by the person who coated them that the material used was expected to stand up as well or better than the original coating. I've put about 3k miles on these gears so far.

I need to get these redone on my S4. Only one cam gear shows the coating a little bit wore, so I was on the fence on having it done. Since I decided to go ahead and have them done, should I go ahead and have the oil pump gear done at the same time? What about the crank gear?

crank gear and oil pump gear are steel so its really not an issue.

That's odd, on my last timing belt job, my oil pump gear was *really* worn down, but all the rest were OK. Perhaps the PO was running SAE30?

earlier cars may actually have an aluminum oil pump gear.

But if its steel and you loose the coating its really not a worry. The cam gears are an alloy which when the coating is gone, that allow is fairly quickly worn down so it can become a problem.

However, if youve found someone to do the cam gears, then i would just do the oil pump gear as well as it shouldnt cost much more and really shouldnt hurt anything. I would not coat the crank gear though as thats the most critical one. Its also the smallest liability so just leave it alone.
