Default Ultimate 928 scale model

There were very few 928 related articles in Finnish car magazines when 928's were new. Now when production ended 10 years ago it's very rare to see 928 mentioned at all. Luckily now we have one exception. Classic car magazine Mobilisti has a story about 1:43 scale model made out of solid silver.

I'll try to translate what it says. Very interesting method how parts are done. Story goes something like this:

"Porsche out of silver

Having once own cars scale model made out of silver sounds exotic. For traditional jeweller making models shouldn't be overwhelming task. Helsinki's Aikamuoto Watch & Design's Timo Turunen made to order a Porsche 928 S4 in 1:43 scale.

Text: J.H. Pictures: T.T.T.

In this case model making was started from ready made metallic toy car of which was sawed into suitable pieces. These were used as templates for making of casting moulds. Wax was cast into moulds to get part that melts in heat. When submerged into running plaster wax parts form cavities from where wax can be easily heated out once plaster has hardened. All it takes is to pour liquid silver into cavities and now we have made Porsche parts out of silver.

Method seems easy but if one has melted metal one can only wonder practical difficulties. Surface tension of molten metal is quite high, it stays naturally as some mm thick drops. How can it be inserted into for example Porsche's rear spoiler shaped mould? Well, plaster is spongy so when moulds underside is subjected to underpressure metal sort of sucks in to moulds cavities.

Turunen makes also other cars and models on order. Easiest is to cast replica of plastic models. Laborous making of wax moulds is not needed because plastic part melts out of plaster as easily as wax. Naturally customers level of requested workmanship of course raises amount of work and models price. Making of windshield wipers, mirrors etc small parts easily doubles used hours. At it's cheapest, model can be had for few hundreds. Of cource there is no limit to the price. It's easy to install into model for example headlights made out of diamonds and rear lights made out of rubies or other godies if customer necessarily wants."

Picture texts from top left to bottom right:

"Ready silver sculpture. Not all can be made by casting, for example cars windows are cut from silver plate."

"Car pieces made out of green wax are grouped into treelike unity which is turned upside down and submerged into plaster. After plaster is hardened, wax can be melted away. Cars plastic wheels melt at same time. Molten metal can be cast into part shaped cavities inside plaster."

"In below picture black parts made out of silver are direcly from inside casting. Details are replicated very well, even factorys name can be clearly seen."

"Turunen won 'customize neppis' model car competitions over 11 year old class in year 2003 with this silver 'neppis' car. Prize was trip to F1 races in Monza."
