Default Exhaust (again), (somewhat long)

Hi, I've searched and read about how to build a good shark setup, but I still have a few things you might like to comment on...?

My car has the m28/09 engine, basically an euro 4.5L, and it differs somewhat from the original 4.5l engines (pistons, cams, valve springs etc.) It rates at 240hp @5200(!) rpm, and has a higher max torque than the OB 4.5L. Anyway, I'm digressing...

My current exhaust looks like what you see in the pictures.(custom made for a PO). It is dead quiet, according to me. I could live with more noise ifI could be led to believe that there was a power gain....

I took it to the shop that made it today, to discuss improvements. They told me all 3 "mufflers" were straight through 3" perforated, and packed with glass. And they told me since I had a 3" pipe basically straight thru all the way, there would be no gain in removing one of the cans. Initialy they built the system w/o the small rear can, but the noise was unberable to the PO, and he took the car back to have the rear one put in (also straight thru).

I was considering removing the front one, but the shop adviced against.

The only improvement we came up with was optimizing the crossover section, bending the tubes to get a smaller angle. That would require to fit a smaller front muffler/resonator, to make room.

So, what do you guys think? The car is otherwise stock, should I just leave the exhaust as is? Are there any obvious improvements to this setup?

If you are going to stick with a single-pipe system and would like more noise, I would replace the front muffler with a good y-pipe (..2 into 1), and then connect that to the rest of your existing system.

I'm only speculating, but where you drew the circle in the pic, there must be lots of turbulance there since the angles formed by the two connecting pipes are so abrupt. A good y-pipe with a megaphone collector would surely smooth that out.

And best of all, it would sound great with the straight-thru muffler you already have.

i agree with lag, especialy if you think its too quiet now. leave the rear muffler in place.

Where the two pipes meet, the angle is more than 90 degrees, that surely must be sub-optimal:

I've seen pictures, drawings and measurements of good y-sections, but can not find them at the moment, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Go to http://www.thepowerbroker.net

and ask for something like this. In looking at your setup, it can't be exactly like this because mine is made to connect to msds headers, but I am sure he has the dimensions to make one for you that will work. Probably answer most of your other exhaust questions too. (If you can get him away from his rear mounted turbo project.) Good luck.
