Pin striping
At our last local 928 get together, someone complimented the pin striping on my Chiffon white 84S. Though I was aware of it, it wasn't until I started looking at the other 928's there that I realized that mine was the only one with pin striping. Mine was also the only 928 without side mouldings. I am its third owner and the striping was there when I bought it. My question is, was pin striping a factory option? Does it have anything to do with the side moulding delete option? Here are some photos. Notice that the pin striping is two colors.

That was no doubt hand painted in the US and not factory was somewhat popular in the late 1970s especially on Corvettes/hotrods...

I have a 914/6 with two color striping and it is very subtle. It is also a disaster if you need to repaint a panel. You can buy striping brushes at your auto paint store, and do it yourself. I once gave a guy a case of beer to stripe my entire '55 Chevy, including the name on the front fender. And what a great job he did. Then someone broadsided it shortly thereafter. S**t. Pissed me off.

You have a very sharp car. Sorry to be a pessimist but have you looked behind the door panels or other hidden areas to make sure the paint matches ALL over the car?
I have owned several cars with pin stripes. '73 Nova - no moulding 350 Custom, 87 Alfa Romeo Milano Silver - no moulding and.. well that is about it. I believe that on both cars it was used to accent the shape of the cars as neither had any previous bodywork. All of my other cars have had some sort of moulding or trim. Wierdest one was an '84 Volvo 242 DL. They stopped shipping the 242 to US in '83. It had turbo moulding and all blacked out trim, go find that anywhere else on the same year Volvo in the US.
On my '83 944 however I think that one of the PO's may have used it to draw attention from another issue, no strait panels. It is amazing what you can do with stripes. It will tend to draw your eye away from other aspects if done correctly.
Needless to say I don't have pin stripes anymore Working on the rest.

Side moldings were optional in the early years. Later there was a delete option.
Pin stripes was a fashion thing for a while - much more popular on this side of the Atlantic than in the old world. Porsche can claim innocence on that one...

That pinstriping was VERY well done- and on your white car it actually looks fine. I wouldn't remove it.
MOST of the time, however, in my opinon... a 928 owner who adds something like that to their car needs to be flogged! Pinstripes are not a good idea on this car, a vehicle who's shape needs to accented, not diluted.

Second Normy's comments! The striping is arrow straight, and colour selection likely compliments the interior.
I assume the PO spent the $$ for superior craftsmanship and hand painting; however, I've seen many pin strip jobs done from a roll of vinyl tape - which can be made to disappear .

Pin Stripping
I agree with Justin; Ive also seen the car and it's beautiful with the pin stripping. Really sets the car off. I've always been a fan of pin stripping. Although I don't want any on my shark, Dave's looks VERY good.

Do not try to remove pin stripping if it has been on a car for a long time because the paint under the pin stripe will not be aged and faded (all paint fades).......leaves you with ghost pin stripes subtle but visible.

Thanks to all who replied. I spoke to the PO and the pin striping was there when he bought it from the original owner, who bought it new in Arizona. I guess he had the stripes applied. The stripe colors do compliment the champagne leather interior. I don't intend to remove it.
Thanks,

Dave,
Having seen the car myself - it is one awesome car.
I would like to be first on the list if you ever decide to sell.
The pin striping is very nice and perfect on your car.
