Bull **** happens, but what the F!!
SO I have verbal agreement with this guy Ron Johnson in MN to buy his Iris Blue 928 GTS, I am waiting on the paperwork to sign and return and I don't hear anything for a day. So I send him an email and this is the response. I was the first to call and the first to offer him money. His words to me was that we "had a Deal".
Anthony,
Sorry I haven’t replied earlier. As I think I had told you there have been 3 including yourself
Dealing on this car. One of the other interested party’s pulled the trigger and paid me cash in full more than
What we were talking about with no PPI. I am sorry that you missed out on this car. It was a pleasure speaking with
You and I wish you the best of luck in your quest for a GTS.
Ron
I can't believe someone who prides himself in being a fair minded long time PCA member could stoop this low without at a minimum give me a chance to counter offer.
I would have closed this deal weeks ago but my Father-in-law was deathly sick in the Hospital and I had no choice but to wait. I guess you live and learn, but to me after numerous conversations with a person and a verbal agreement this kind of behavior is just pure slime.
I am assuming the car must have been worse off than advertised and he was afraid of the PPI but a deal is a deal and some people are honest and some are Bull ****.
I hope it wasn't one of you guys that bough this car. You have all been very nice so far and was hoping to hang out and learn from all of your experiances. However, that does not appear to be happening and unless their is another Iris Blue 928 GTS for sale I guess I wll be searching until another Iris Blue car comes along. So I guess I will be talking to you guys in about 20 years.
Thanks for all the help. It was fun while it lasted.

People like such are the ones that make it hard for the rest of us who stick to our word. I have made numerous "spoken" deals and agreements and have been screwed around a couple of times but what can one do?
Best of luck next time.

My expierience has been that if you dont at least put a down payment in someones hand , it aint your deal.Think about it from the other side. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. I have sold cars as a sideline for years, and I have had quite a few "done deals" never show back up.
Always remember, Money talks, BS walks !!

Same as above, I've sold my car two or three times and never heard back from the person. I told the next buyer to hold on a day or two to see if the person who said they would buy it came up with the money. You never know what's going to happen. Banks close early, can't get money on a Saturday eve. But i usually give benefit of doubt to the first person to say they will buy it. If another comes up with money, i'll contact the first guy and tell him to some up with the moeny within a time frame (or at least a down payment) and go aout it that way.
Too bad. Probably not the perfect car for you anyway. Things usually work put for the best in the end.

Without a written contract, it is a cash market.Guys who buy cars for a living know this and carry a wad around. Live and learn.
PS, naming names here, has often proven embarassing to the namer when the whole story comes out. A man who really values his honor will settle his differences privately, as opposed to splashing someone's name on a public forum, as a form of punishment. Just my opinion.....
Good luck acquiring the car of your derams.........

Cobalt, the same thing happened to me, the guy was supposed to send some final pics of the car, he never did. I said basically what you did I thought we had a deal. He said someone came a bought the car last night. So I go to my friends house find the car I bought on autotrader and made plans to go get the car finally a e-mail appears and I call him back and asked him why, he said the sale didnt go through and told me to come and get the car. I told him I found one in Burbank Ca. and he told me he will meet me there so I can check out his car. Go down with the idea if I dont buy the other car I will get his. Well I never called him back. Dont worry although your choice is a bit more difficult to locate something will come for the best, if it was meant to be it would of happened, so chin up and something better is on the way.

Yes hilarious.
I had a deal with someone on some wheels sometime ago. He had called me and offered me a deal involving trading and some money. I drove there, put some of the wheels (there were more than 4) on and liked them, said OK let's finalise details, I want them.
Next day first thing I call someone I know and trust and ask him what he thinks of the wheels, what he thinks I should pay alongside my wheels in trade. "It's not worth your while" he says. So I say thanks for the advice BUT I am going to buy them anyway.
I call the seller. "Sorry Dude the guy you spoke to earlier called me and we made a deal on some of the wheels (the rarest ones)".
It's all about what you consider fair. Buyer and seller contend that I had no claim since there was no final agreement and technically I suppose they may be correct. That lost me 2 friends that day and I've never let that happen ever again.

Wasn't me!
Definitely an unfortunate turn, but you know what they say about 'money talks...'.

I must echo what Gretch had to say: In the first thread, there was clearly an amount of anxiety in the decision process - and in response to my post encouraging a conditional deposit prior to inspection - and suggesting use of your expertise to sidestep a PPI, the response was
"Garth,
After 20+ years of Porsche ownership I hope I have learned enough (although look at the questions I am asking, I already know the correct answers but keep flip flopping over the entire deal (the emotion coming through)) If the price was lower I would just take a shot and see but I know I could get screwed if something down deep is lurking ready to blow up in my face ...."
So the element of doubt was there, and with no deposit = 'you snooze, you lose'.
Have heart - it is disappointing to miss one, but there are more. Putting family priorities on top as you did is honorable - the rest is just a car search: truly wish you the best of luck - and hope to see you here!

I agree he should have given you one more chance, but ...
You did write "I would have closed this deal weeks ago but ...;" and
It sounds like things had been hanging fire for a while; and
You were aware the seller was still talking to others; and
You wanted a PPI, which apparently hadn't even been scheduled; and
I presume you reserved the right to back out or renegotiate afterwards; and
It might not have been an all-cash deal; and
No $$ had changed hands, even for an option.
A deal's a deal but, based on your post, that's not exactly a deal. That's more like "I'll buy your car at this price IF it passes a PPI." That's a contingent agreement, i.e., it's still in negotiation. I'd have given you a courtesy call, especially if we'd been in touch regularly, but felt free to impose a very short deadline for consummation, the kind involving more $$ to match my hard offer, a cashier's check, overnight FedEx and no PPI.
I hope your father-in-law has recovered and I hope you find an iris-blue 928GTS

When my Son in Law and I go the an auto swap meet he typically has $30,000 or so in CASH in his pockets. When he focuses on a car ...Camero, Vette, Cuda, Mustang etc. he asks if they have the title and are ready to sell it right NOW..... only if they say YES does he bother to negotiate. Because any negotiation without completing the deal simply sets a "floor" for someone else to come along and out bid you. Same thing chasing adds in the paper/cars.com/recycler in the call you ask is there any reason that I can not come buy the car TODAY if I bring the cash can I take it home with me. Only if the answer is Yes does he go see the car. And no he never pays what people are asking except maybe the 20 k for the last 1969 Z-28 he just bought

Do not despair.. There have been at least 3 Iris Blue GTS's for sale in the past 6-8 months.... This car you were going to buy was on Ebay, and I guess it did not sell... Anyway, just keep looking, you will find one...
There was one at DEVEK for many months just sitting there... We are all not bad guys, and if you really want one, keep looking, you'll find one...
Regards,

Hi Jim,
I agree, that is the way to do it.
I remember when I saw the ad for my ex-89S4, I called and no one was home. Did a reverse phone # lookup and was sitting on the guys front porch step waiting for him with lots of $100 bills in my pocket. Once he arrived I kept him occupied outside (so he couldn't check his answering machine) and negotiated the deal .... drove home with it 30 mins later. Ironically when we were inside finishing paperwork his wife gave him the messages from the answering machine... there were already 3 committed buyers at his asking price :-)
