Hi Tom,
I hadn't seen that up close yet, Nice job!!

FYI, the 12 incher should bolt right up to that.

BTW, I see the "Tequila Repair" is holding up nicely :-)

You guys are making Mark Kibort all jealous, I am sure he is in his garage installing a big wing on his Holbert red shark.

thanks. the struts were actually a semi emergent job done at the track for a total cost of about $5. they make the mounts very solid though.

i'll call you on the bigger wing.

should've put more rivets in the repair to remind me how many shots caused the carnage

From my memory you would need to at least double the amount of rivets :-)

Joe,

Surely not, I could have sworn that he has basically said over and over that his 928 didn't have enough power to push one of those BFWs down the straights

Ha ha... don't you all know that the stock S4 wing is better from 0 - 15mph...at which point it loses about 0.01% to the big wing but comes back for a 75% advantage from 25 - 85mph and then at top speed the gain drops to 25%. Averaged out over typical racing speeds and corner exit speeds the S4 wing has an advantage of 0.005% over the Big wing.

hahahaha..

sorry couldn't resist..

Later,
Tom
89GT (with stock wing)

BTW, You forgot to mention the effect that gearing will have on this.

Man, when Mark gets up and about and gets on his computer his is going to FLOG me, you, and Joe!!

We might as well go ahead and change the title of this thread to "AERO & Gearing 101", I know it's coming.. :-)

Mark, before you get started on us we are just playing with you, what else are friends good for!!

You guys are funny!!

hey, i still believe some of my advantages at laguna and Thunderhill are due to me NOT having a big wing. And yes, Joe, i dont have the hp to run a big wing. remember, that wing drag has to be pulled down the entire straight. sometimes 10 seconds even down a short track. (not like your Willow, where im sure it would help me there)

I still got to wonder why John V with no wing, was 5 seconds faster at Sebring than the big winged 928s. he also had one of the faster times at Road America vs the bunch too. Hmmmm.

These REAL racing teams dont spend $30,000 a day for wind tunnel testing for nothing. By the way, there really is no point to put down big downforce in the rear, unless you take care of the front too (with a equally as effective splitter) Unless, you want to have lots of lift in the front, and thats just fantastic for fixing our 928s inherent push.

Hey, looking at big bird, with realitively NO front splitter, AND and beautiful wing, way up high, out of the boundary flow zone....... it may just someday be a BIG BIRD, if he gets a long enough straight and kicks up the boost a bit.
Ever see a car fly??? a few of them do for much less of a set up mistake!!

By the way, there has not been ONE person that could challenge the below trade offs of the gear/torque/accel differences between the S4 and GT/GTS ratios.
Lots of arguing, but no acceptance. By understanding things like these differences, we can all get faster on the track and overall! In racing physics, there are trade offs.

here is the chart for gearing incase you missed it . Ha ha.

DIFF BETWEEN GTS AND S4
0-48 48mph 15% advantage GTS
48-54 mph= 6mph 30% advantage S4
54-71 mph = 17mph 15% advantage GTS
71-82 mph =11mph 30% adv. S4
82-102 mph =20mph 15% adv GTS
102-115 mph = 13mph 30%adv S4
115-135 mph = 20mph 15% adv GTS
135-153 mph= 18mph 30% adv S4

Summary, depending on the target speed or speed range, gearing changes can either hurt or help your total accelerating forces. (application of hp to the wheels over the range of operation)

The End

hi mark,
splitter is in the works. rear wing went on after the rear got "light" on the back straight at vir somewhere north of 150 mph. not a comfortable position to be in. like you said, without real airtunnel testing, it's hard to know whether a splitter is even needed. i can tell you though that the rear is no longer light.
