Default had an alignment recently done... (semi-long)

When I first got my car, I was sent a sheet of an alignment check that had been done. It was horribly off, and the tires showed it. I kept driving it until the rear tires were bald, then replaced them with BFG KDs. About a month after, it was time to replace the fronts. As I went in, I noticed they had a new Visualiner alignment machine but the installer had broke a wheel-panel so I told them i'd be back in a week.

My alignment started on friday... about 2 hours into the job and they still couldn't get the caster right on the pssgr front wheel. I know they had never done an alignment on a 928 before, but they're really cool guys and let me get under there with them to watch the process. I had mentioned that my car *might* need the alignment specs for an '87, but none of us were sure and the visualiner program didn't mention anything about that. They were trying to get the caster between 3 and 4, but couldn't get it lower than about 4.2. I called it quits for the day since I needed to get on the freeway to take care of some things.

I looked up Earl's alignment page (THANK YOU EARL!) and made a printout of the 928 suspension disclaimer and alignment specs. Indeed I did need caster for 86.5+, and the shop had actually gotten it right (they set it around 4.6).

I went back with all info in hand, and we got everything on the front wheels dialed in. The rear wheels however were off, and the camber bolts wouldn't give them enough adjustment. I believe my rear camber is at about -1.39, and i'm aiming for -0.66. They mentioned that I might be able to get another camber bolt (Northstar model #2000) that allows more adjustment. What do you guys think?

All in all, i'm very pleased with these guys and I would say that after they get my car right, I would definately reccomend them to other 928 owners. They're located in Redondo Beach on Artesia. They have a visualiner and the proper equipment to do alignments WITHOUT lifting the car. The specs that the visualiner program had matched up with Earl's site EXCEPT for the 86.5+ caster. I left them a printout of Earl's page just in case they ever run into another 928. ALL of the work was only $40. Once they get the rear wheels dialed in, they'll charge another $20 but that's all.

The first thing that comes to mind as effecting camber would be suspension height settings - especially if you have the same adjustment limitation on both sides ( were it one side only, a curb bash in its PO days, etc could do it). If these are correct, then ....
Regards the rear eccentrics, the diameter of the large disc is already maxed out by its guide bars on the X-member; therefore, the only thing that one can change is the weld point of the bolt being positioned further away from the disc center: if this were to be done, there must be an adequate diameter hole through the X-member to allow the bolt to turn through its now larger conical arc. This may all be possible, or may require some creative dremmel work - and not weaken the member. Do not know it that would be possible - perhaps ...

For some reason, my ride height never came to mind. I'll have to check that out. I was thinking more towards worn bushings. Is worn bushings causing camber issues not common?

I had a similar problem and my eccentrics were in backwards or ??

i think that worn bushings on the 'bannana' shaped link on the top of the rear suspension can cause excessive camber, i swaped mine out to try and cure my rears excess but to no avail. currently ive got -2.3 on both sides after swapping the lower rear suspension arm bushings for polyurethane. ive also heard that what i need to do is pull these rear lower arms toward each other with some ratchet mechanism whilst all the bolts are loose. -1.3 sounds pretty ok to me though, especialy if you like to corner, my 255x17" rear tyres at -2.3 showed no adverse wear. next alignement i plan to dial the fronts out a little more, toward 1.3 as well.
