Jim, I appreciate all of your comments and I believe that you are 100% correct; find someone you trust and maintain that relationship. My response as to a "BAD" mechanic was somewhat tounge-in-cheek, as I can't really find ANYONE in my town who knows a 928 from a 914; the first few minutes of talking a couple of "Porsche mechanics" convinced me of that.
I've found someone I trust for my US cars; the first time I went in with what I had diagnosed as a major problem turned out to be something minor and that's only what was repaired (and charged for), in spite of also checking and dismissing my diagnosis. My philosophy is that since I don't have the TIME, location and all the tools necessary to adequately some many things, I just have to believe and trust that the person to whom I am taking the car will be someone of integrity. I also realize that this is how this person is making their living and do not screw with their livelihood.
Although I'm sure there are other facts in this whole story, IMHO, the mechanic who tore up the check is the winner in my book. He realized that it just wasn't worth the $h!t he'd be dealing with on a recurring basis.

It appears this is another example of "You don't know how cheap a good mechanic is until you've had a bad one!" On that note the 928's are fairly complicated and a knowledgeable mechanic is worth his weight it gold! It might be a local rennlister or a local shop, but either way it is invaluable to 928 ownership.
