Default Cruise Control Dead

My cruise control would work for a short while and then would surge above and below the set point.

I had already checked all vacuum lines and ones associated with the cruise control in the left wheel well.

I decided to remove the computer and try to re-solder the connections on the board like may others have with success. I re-installed the unit and now nothing happens at all. I checked to make sure it has power.

Any ideas? Did I fry the unit while soldering or something?

I had the same experience - and bad luck on the resolder attempt; however, I'm still convinced that the problem is in the controller. I followed the WSM diagnostics, and by using a jumper wire or two was able to get the throttle to respond to 'jumped' inputs. Thus, the vac system and drive cables work. As the speedo works, I assume that the transmission sensor input to the controller is also correct. That still leaves the silver box.
One report of success was to dissolve all the varnish protective film off the circuit board, and resolder all ~ 5000 ( maybe less) joints - that will be next ... if you get to it first, surprise me with good news .....

I remember taking my apart and soldering, etc. Finally, after it stuck on with full throttle open, I decided to get a new control unit.

"Finally, after it stuck on with full throttle open, I decided to get a new control unit."

Good idea! Another part supplied as a rebuilt unit from many Rennlist sponsors.
Why would anyone waste time fouling with that, when a rebuilt unit is so cheap?

Nick, The module removal may save a measly ~5-6 oz ( <200g), and it is located center back of the consul - under the radio.
Of the 2 screws holding it in, one is easy - one is .... otherwise . The real weight gain will be the pound or two or so you will lose in sweating and squirming around to get the second one loose: Look at it as a win - win deal.

i better not as im likely to resort to non conservative/destructive techniques, given that scenario.

Don't forget the cable and vacuum actuator under the wing/fender. Nick, check your email...

Look at the price of a rebuilt. If I spend 2 hours fixing mine, I'm making $150/hr. There's one reason...
