I got mine from John Speake and it still works great almost two years after.
Stay away from a shop in texas advertising they'll fix any LH unit, they took me for my money.

Yes, I'm English. I traced my family tree through 13 generations......well maybe a little bit of Welsh in there somewhere.

Yep, Lucas is a swear word in English too. And "British Leyland" is a well known form of abuse too :-)

I don't take kids as trade-ins either...

John the problem with kids as trade-ins, is that usually people will send you their duds. I mean, when was the last time someone sent you a hard-working young buck that could actually help with your projects?? I jsut don't know man ... seems the quality of kids is on the decline .... I've had to return quite a few of them, seems no matter how large they are, their clothes keep falling off around their knees ..... I figure kids are all aspiring to become plumbers these days .... and btw those prickly things in their eyebrows, bellies and other extremities tend to get caught everywhere too ...

Sounds like someone didn't do competitive shopping.

John I would agree, but you really need to get out and shop a bit more ... 18 ain't what it used to be Dude ... right now by 18, they:

1. smoke like chimneys
2. have 3 or 4 kids, sometimes they don't remember
3. weigh more than their dad
4. wear bigger clothes than their dad
5. listen to stuff that would be consdered inciting violence in a court of law
6. don't like to work because they don't deal well with authority
7. don't believe in contraception because it limits their "style"
8. don't drive because their licence was permanently revoked several times
9. don't drive because their insurance rates are at the max, around 1k per month
10. don't speak English known to any human being except those in their age group (egad ... think about this in 20 years)
11. have tattoos across their eyelids
et cetera et cetera

IMHO you should consider taking 40yo's in trade ... they are cleaner, friendlier and understand the word "responsibility"

Come again? That was the going rate for a rebuilt unit directly from Porche at the time. New was something like $1400. At that time there was no John Speake. You could have played roulette with a rebuild from some guys in Chicago at about 1/2 that cost, but that invoved waiting several weeks and not much of a warranty. I got mine the same day. In fact, I got it within 60 minutes delivered to my car on the freeway (thanks to Marc T).

> ..... that is some HARD CASH!! Did you have to send a core?

Yes, Porsche requires a core ($375) and the kicker is if they suspect you have opened the computer they will refuse the core and you get hit for the $375 on top of the computer price. I too sell the Genuine rebuilds, but Rich and John offer a better solution.

Like I said before, they're MANY sources for LH units from MULTIPLE Rennlist sponsors
which are better than the junk Porsche OEM units which are probably still in the Porsche
distribution system or rebuilt units using the same junk parts.

The key to a reliable LH unit is the replacement of the main element, with a redesigned
part and NOT just a replacement of the original junk part/parts or a minor fix to LH unit.

Also, the pricing is competitive if one shops!

Bottomline: Only buy an LH unit which has been fully modified & updated to prevent future failures.
