Question: Clutch disc hub to short shaft fit
For a '79 double disc clutch:
Is it typical to have a bit of clearance between the short shaft splines and clutch disc hub splines? While I was adjusting my intermediate ring this morning I noticed some rotational play in the discs. For example, while the clutch was in the released position I was able to "wiggle" (thats a technical term) the clutch discs by using a screwdriver tip against the disc edges. I am able to do this on both discs.

Shaft I splines tend to wear as it's made out of soft material. This obviously leads to play between shaft and disc hub splines. If parts are not brand new small amount of play can be expected. What is small and whats too large depends on who's answering. If there is clear sings of wear in shaft splines it needs to be replaced.

What you need to do, if this concerns you, is to pull the clutch and inspect the intermediate shaft. The splines run the length of the shaft so there's plenty of un-used spline to compare the worn section to.
A worn shaft can cause the plates to stick and drag. No amount of adjustment can fix it. Hard to quanitify the wiggle but there needs to be some play so the discs can move fore-aft a bit.

Did a little more reading - the WSM states that some radial play is normal. I spent some time under the shark inspecting and adjusting the clutch. The discs do seem to be hanging up. So far so good.
