It may start off with either a no idle situation or hard starting progressing to a rapid clicking of the injectors with the key on but the engine not running. At that point, call John Speake or Rich Andrade!

Simply, don't. Disconnect the battery from the system, charge it, then start the car. There are some diodes in the LH that are only rated at 16vdc. If you get enough of a voltage spike during charging (with it connected) or during jumping, it's toast. I will charge the battery in the car while it's connected but only at low charging levels. (nothing more than 10 amps, ever!)

It's entirely up to you if you decide to jump your car. Many people have and have gotten away with it, but I don't plan on taking that chance. I replace my battery at the first sign of weakness. I cannot say that I have jumped my car in the last 5 years. I have never been stranded due to a discharged battery.
If you are out somewhere in dire need, I would disconnect the battery from the car, then let it sit on a jump from another vehicle for 10/15 minutes charging. Hopefully that will do it. Or you could use the jumper cables to link a charged battery in another vehicle to yours WITHOUT the other vehicle running. Why take a chance on wasting a functional LH, they are dying easy enough without jumping.
But once again, it's your decision. Take a chance?

In 2000 I drove to a gas station in my 928- a place about 1/2 mile away. A guy there asked me to jumpstart his dead Ford Taurus while I was there. I didn't dare do it! I told him I'd go home and get my truck and come back...he looked at me skeptically. He was pretty appologetic when I showed up 10 minutes later with my '66 F100...
The manual says not to do it. Don't do it!

Why did Porsche do this? Why not engineer a way to make it possible without damaging things? Sounds like an oversight on Porsches part.

Normy,
Where in the manual does it say NOT to? When I first bought my car, I had to jump it and looked in the manual and there is a write-up on exactly what to do. I have an '89 S4.

When I purchased my 88 S4 it had a dead cell in the battery. I had to jump it several times using the technique from the owners manual. No problems. I have also done this many times with my 86.5 S. No problems. I have even jumped other 928's from my 928. No problem. And I can't tell you the number of times I have seen tow truck drivers jumping 928's. I'm a little lost here. What's the problem? Does the brand of battery have naything to do with this? I have heard not to use one of those portable jump starters because they surge really hard.

Seriously, if there is a PROVEN/DOCUMENTED problem I sure as hell would like to know of it. Was this ever an issue with Porsche? Technical service bulletin or recall notice? Or is some of this a little bit based on urban legand?
