Email sent.

Does anybody know if Porsche (or whoever now owns the rights to the WSMs) is lawyer-happy about people posting the WSMs online?

Sweet. Thanks a ton.

I've been wondering the same thing for a while now (about putting something online).

I've wonder about this as well. Reason it came to my mind was that the Bentley service manual for the Audi A4/S4 (not as technical or comprehensive was the 928 WSM, but the bible for these cars) is online at some private website. This one is definitely not "approved" as Bentley still sells the CD/DVD (they are in the business of selling auto tech manuals). It has been online for at least 2 years. I'm surprised it has not been shut down yet. Maybe it's hosted in Russia or Brundi or someplace difficult to shutdown.

Hey, maybe Rennlist should offer to but the electronic publishing rights to the WSM from Porsche and provide it online to paying memebers! Great incentive to join up. Well...it's and idea, anyway.

There was a discussion about the WSM ownership a year or two ago with PCNA. They gave the rights to it to the manual printer in Germany. So Porsche waits until they have some critical mass of paid-in-advance orders before they place an order with the printer. The discussion was about what it would take for somebody like the OC to take over ownership and administration of WSM production in the US. They also mentioned that any CD product would need to be compliant with their factory standards and formats, for some reason.

So, in a nutshell, I guess if we want to see the manuals in print again, we need to put up the $1200 or so (!!!) each that they listed for last time I asked, and do that XX times to equal the critical minimum order level. Wait a year for the presses to run and the ship to drift down from the fatherland to Atlanta, etc.

At this point, with the rights signed away, your worry on publishing a copy would probably be from the printer's IP attorneys rather than from Porsche AG or PCNA.

The info came verbal from PCNA's parts guy, and should probably be verified with them in writing before you start a little closet business printing the manuals at Kinko's.

I think that the wisest thing to do is to keep the deal that we have now - just let Jim keep a low profile, and continue to furnish the excellent tech info CD set at a very reasonable cost.

I'll second Wally's thoughts on the status quo. My comments were just thinking out loud about who has the biggest community of interest that might be willing to pay. This may have been well discussed before, but I am surprised the current initiative has been allowed to continue to date. I'm happy it has..and hope it continues.
