Never Again
Try the 3' round 10-quart catch pan I found at Advance Auto if you DIY. Hard to miss with that one, but cardboard's always a good idea too.
I'll have to try the local shop-bring in your filter trick. Takes forever to get the belly pan off just to do an oil change. Well worth the extra $5 if I can find someone to do it with Mobil 1.

See, the benefit of driving a 911 is you already have a nice big oil pan at your disposal! As for where to get rid of if, IL law says that oil change shops MUST take the stuff but only a certain amount. I take mine to a Jiffy Lube on Elston, where they take my name and the quantity turned in.

All of the auto parts stores here have a collection tank in the back. Makes sense for them to have it since they want you to buy your oil and filters from them and they get some $$$ from the recycling company. Walmart doesn't take it here, don't know about Sears.
this time I manage to do the same in the underground garage of my apartment block. Although I've cleaned most of the mess the concrete is now stained
Then when I was pouring the oil from the drain pot (actually a plastic baby bath) into the can using a funnel, the funnel fell out of the can....
Then I was putting the car back on the ground and when I lowered one side another half litre ran out.
It would only have taken one complaint from a neighbour and I would instantly lose the ability to work on my car in the garage
now I've got two gallons of oil sitting in my garage I have to haul somewhere to re-cycle

Draining oil is no problem. IF you use the right catch container. I've been using a 5-gallon rectangular one with about a 1-inch lip all around and two drain holes in the centre a bit lower than the edges. It also has a drain plug cap, and two caps for the drain holes so it can be used as a normal bottle once it's full and tilted upright. I usually have to lift the 928 only about 3 inches to use it, just enough for me to crawl under anyway. And it won't let the drain plug fall into the oil because the drain holes are too small. Never has failed me.
I too used to use all manner of cut-off containers when I realised ...... time to buy the right tool.

just float the car on over and I'll show you some of the local night life.
Are pits legal in the US? Most places have banned them now - too risky for polluitng the groundwater or somesuch

I've also given up on the home oil change. I take some pretty strange cars to the local Firestone shop. If they don't have the filter, no prob, I give them one to install. Worst was the V12 Espada. 14 quarts, Baldwin cartridge filter mounted sideways at the front of the motor. The kid in the 'pit' was scared to touch it. I walked him through it. They charged me extra for the quarts of oil. So what? I didn't have to lube my whole driveway with used motor oil.
I use kitty litter under leaky cars. Comes in a 50Lb bag, and is theoretically okay to throw in municipal trash. I guess if it was soaked with motor oil, the haulers might balk. I use the old bag to hold the used litter, then a plastic bag around that. What's an enviromentalist/car nut to do? I would love to recycle the litter, but really, who's gonna take it? Worse than my nuclear tailing from the diffusion processor- sheesh.
Tried to get a 'pit' approved for my garage project here in rural Texas. Local inspector asked "what's that deep hole?" I said "service access". He said "nope, no way, no shape, no how, no drains, no depressions." If I wanted a two level, it had to be a wall drop off, all the way to the footing of the bldg. With signs/guard rail/flashing lights/klaxon. Guess I'm getting a four post lift instead.

paul thats so funny but it must have been terrible! i cant even lift my car without a trolley jack and i dont own one. anything that needs access underneath and im off to a garage. by the way, with my current oil consumption i stick to the 12K change as im sure it actualy gets ahcnged during the interval.

Has anyone used one on a 928? I'm really determined to be able to do this myself without another incident.
