Default What A Car!

Today has been unseasonably warm, sunny, and wonderful for February.

Had a long week at work and had to de-stress. Talked the wifey into a drive on State Rd. 6 to Delta, UT. It's not much to look at - desolate country - but the road is empty and eternal. Long straights, gentle sweeping curves, not a soul in sight.

Kept it at 110 as the default speed. Had a handful of sustained stretches at 140. (I chickened out at that point. I've only had this car for a year, and I need a little bit of long-term trust in an older car before I top it out. But the GTS and I have a relationship that is good up to 140!)

It was like driving a bank vault. Other than the scenery passing real fast, and the dotted white lines pretty much turning into a solid white line, it was simply routine and effortless.

I have so much respect for the 928.

Sounds like great fun with a great car! Do you have a radar detector, just in case?

Bigs,
When they are running and handling as advertised ... There may be better, but I can't afford it.
And I'm satisfied (temporarily) with what I have. Enjoy.
Nicole,
"Do you have a radar detector?".
At 140?

HA...I did the same thing to Phoenix last weekend to Barrett-Jackson on the I 10. We kept at 110-115 for many a mile and had the room at one point to bring the GTS up to 140+ in no time. I would have mashed the throttle and taken her up higher, but once I saw tail lights a mile or so ahead, I pulled off and brought it down. Funny how those vehicles traveling at 70+ come up REALLY fast at 140 We got down to 80...felt like we could get out and walk. I have had the 82 up past 135 and there is a good difference in ride between it and the GTS. You just don't feel it in the GTS and there was a lot more head room to push the digits higher.

Nicole - Yes I have a radar detector. But at 140 it's window dressing. More useful is the fact that the road is open and clear, and you can see for miles ahead.

And, I have to admire my wife, who simply continued our conversation - pausing only to idly inquire, "How fast were we going that time?"

There may indeed be faster cars, but where you gonna find one that's equally as rock-solid, reasonably affordable, supremely comfortable, and anywhere near as dependable?

They got it right on this one! Hats off to Porsche.

I've done 130 in my 928 twice....was nervous both times. Not from the car..which seemed to be saying to me "Its about time you got with the program Normy!" I don't care for high speeds in street cars.

I agree totally! Even at 140, this car seemed to yawn and say, "Is that all you want?"

Under the right circumstances, these cars are a dream with the pedal to the metal.

Default What a car

I agree! I got my GTS up to 155 in New Mexico on the way back from picking it up in California. Rock solid at that speed. The only reason I backed off was I was about to crest a hill and didn't want any surprises at 155+.

I bought my 928 three months ago. So far I've only had it up to 110. It felt as solid at that speed as it did at 70. Want to take it higher put am a little paranoid about getting a ticket. Love the idea of the US Autobahn Series in Nevada. Now I know what I'm doing on my summer vacation!

Near my place of work there is a new warehouse development, so far unnoccupied. The road is built for trucks, wide and straight, about 1/2 mile long. Saturday afternoon I used it to for a 0-60 run. 6.5 seconds, timed with a stopwatch. It will go quicker, with a little practice by the driver.

Well, that brings up a question. I've done some recent 0-60 runs myself - also stopwatch-timed, so admittedly not the world's most accurate method. I have a GTS, and I got the same 6.5 second time.

I live at about 4500 feet elevation, so I figure I'm gonna lose a little power for that reason. And I've got an AT, so that's probably gonna cost me a little time too. I use the "Hold the car with the brake until revs hit about 1500, then let 'er go" method of launching. And I've got the gear lever down in "2nd" all the time.

But I'm still scratching my head wondering if I shouldn't be getting times more like 6.0 or even high 5's...

Any comments?

(Hmmm... maybe if I lost some weight!)

With a stock AT 928 GTS high 5s are all that you can expect without making significant changes. The car will run better times at sea level, with 91 octane fuel, sticky tires, and on a cold day.

Change of venue. I'm no longer talking about a stock 928. We are now talking only about drag racing, not track racing, not auto cross, not top speed! Pure straight line ETs. How do you reduce your ET?

If you want to reduce your 0 to 60 MPH and / or 1/4 mile ET here are a few options:
1) For AT cars, install a high stall speed torque converter, LSD or PSD rear end, 1st gear kick down by-pass, and adjust the linkages for 1st gear starts (and to hold longer).
2) Start adding HP (SC, turbo, stroker, exhaust, intake changes) and install a custom computer.
3)Increase the rear tire contact area without significantly increasing the rolling diameter (unless you have lots of extra HP / torque available).
4) Strip the car to reduce weight
5) Nitrous (if you have a disposable 928)

A few 928 owners on this forum are running low 4.0s from 0 to 60 MPH (perhaps lower now). Traction issues begin here.

If you intend to join the sub 5.0s club also be prepared to replace the following as they fail due to increased heat and torque; axles, torque tubes, transmissions, clutches, lots of rear tires. You will find out which parts break and how to buy expensive high performance replacements.

Just add money and you will have a 928 that is quick, fast, and that handles better than almost any other production car off the shelf.

Excellent post. Thank you!

So, at my altitude, with an AT, and stock everything, perhaps 6.5 is about what I should expect. Maybe at sea level I'd get to 6.0.

Has anyone at sea level checked 0-60 times on their stock GTS?

Bigs,
I ran a 5.27 0-60 yesterday, according to my g-tech ss pro, one of my best ! see sig for mods. That is with a 5800 rpm 1-2 shift. Your car , if driven correctly, should do a low 5's. My 83 euro s that i sold last year could do 0-60 in 6.4(with me driving). Get the g-tech ss or rr(not the cheap ones), and do some runs,as a stopwatch is useless for this.
