Oh allright, Nicole never SAID she didn't like my car, I was only kidding. She doesn't like the fact that because I won't use leatherique because I am a vegan,
the leather is not soft and pliable. I was only kidding, Nicole. I certainly like hers though, and she keeps it in great condition.

Since you are moving up from a 914 you might be satisfied with a 16 valve car. After years in 914s even my '82 pretty much felt like absolute power. In my 914s for example I felt like I had to plan a pass in advance...back off, pick speed, and swing around. In my '82 I can pass pretty much anything pretty much any time I want. Some members of this board feel the 16 valve cars are slow, but I think they have just lost perspective: I still have an '80 vanagon which weighs more than my 928 and has something like 70hp. I know slow. On the insurance thing: I suggest looking for a car that you can get into for a price that will not drive you to want full coverage insurance. I carry liablity only on my porsches and this is quite reasonable from Mercury Insurance. Even way way back before I turned 25 it was not bad. I think the concerns about the manual trans that Nicole mentioned is mostly an issue before 1980. I'm not sure exactly where the transitions happened but my '82 has a more powerful feel, better shifting and better brakes than my '79. I suspect you can pick up a pretty reasonable daily driver for under 3K. Plus you these cars are pretty indistructable; no thrust bearing failure issues and timing belt failures usually just require new belts.

Karl
I also have Mercury insurance. With my 88 S4 listed as a pleasure vehicle (3rd car) it only costs me $25 a month for full coverage! I need to remove the rental car clause to drop it down to $21 a month! Not bad at all! It would only save me about $5 a month to drop to liability....not worth it to me, since its so cheap in the first place!

Hello again,
yes it is true, I do my own wrenching. And the cost of an oil change probably won't frighten me too bad, since my Mercedes takes 8qts per. And eats pretty much exactly 1 quart per 1000 miles.
I got some great advice here and that alone speaks a lot for the 928 The only thing left to do is test drive one. And I think I'll go for an earlier one. The 914 is such a simple sports car (if underpowered, though I've been fixing that slowly .. cams, pistons etc etc.) and it's for pure driving. Yes, the car leaks. But only when it's pouring rain. And the radio has too been upgraded, though I still can't hear it with the top off at 80MPh and that new exhaust purring.
When I find some time I'll test drive various examples, including my old love affair (the car that is) and "pick my poison"

I wouldn't mind going to some gatherings for the 928 either if you have one let me know

A 914 and 928 are polar opposites.

Nothing about them is very similar, and a 914 can be repaired on the cheap using bug parts.
