Default Central locking works from button, not from key

I haven't seen anyone with the exact problem, so I"m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Central locking works. Pressing the dash button locks and unlocks the doors fine. I have no cycling of the locks. The first time I tried the key, everything work, but since then, using the key only locks/unlocks that door I'm at -drive side lock only does that side, passenger side only that.

This is on an 87. Thanks!

The door lock motors also have contact switches inside . When you manually unlock the door with the key it also moves the rod to the motor and the switch is activated and tells the OTHER door lock motor to also open. Try some adjustment of the motor/rod position ,the motor is mounted to slotted holes as I recall but have the windows open because you may adjust them to a point that they cycle and lock all by them self.

Jim forgot to add that the locks will cycle and lock themselves only with the key in the ignition, engine running, as well as with the windows up!!

Jim, thanks for the quick reply. I won't get to this until this weekend, but took a look at the door today. This is from rear of the door on the outside, there are two allen bolts on the lock mechanism. Is this what you are referring to, or is this something inside the door I need to get at?

You will need to remove the armrest from the center of the door panel as well as the big door panel to look at the door lock motors. DO NOT do anything to the door lock or striker. What needs attention is all inside the door.

After looking at it, that's what I thought. Thanks for the additional info. I'll take a look inside the door this weekend and let everyone know how it goes.

I have the exact opposite problem-- my doors lock in sync from the key, but nothing happens when you press the button. If you lock the doors manually, the light does go on. Any ideas?

Ok, I was going to pull the drivers side door yesterday and start there. 'Cept when I unlocked the car yesterday, everything worked. It had been really cold (like 10F), and it was much warmer yesterday, so I chalked it up to that. I had had a problem with the hatch opening from the drivers side before (could here the motor, but no unlocky), and that was gone too. After a few cycles of it working over the course of the day while running some errands, I get home and voila, doesn't work. Neither does the hatch release drivers side. THe hatch release had always worked on the passenger side, so I went to try it, and after unlocking the passenger side door (no lock motor noises), I open the door, and I hear the hatch release motor go, and the lock motors in the door. Now everything is working. Went out this morning, and things still work.

This sounds more like an intermittent connection or loose connection somewhere? IIRC, when the hatch didn't open from the drivers side, I could hear the motor, but the hatch didn't pop up. Almost like it just wasn't making the full motion.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, I'm not really sure where to start on this now.

Well, I finally sorted this out, so here's what it was, in case anybody stumbles across this - the door switch wasn't tightened up.

Yup, that's it. I finally figured this out when I was fixing my interior lights. They were wired all wrong, one was broken, after getting them sorted out, they didn't turn on when I opened the drivers door, but were fine on the passenger side.. So I checked the door switch, and it was really loose. Tightened it up, the lights worked right. And so did the door lock on the drivers side. And the driver side hatch release.

Maybe I should have caught this when I figured out that opening the passenger side (and thus, triggering it's door switch), made the doors lock and the hatch open, but I guess I'm not that quick. ANyway, it's all working like a charm now. And I put in the Jager LED lights, which look really cool with the blue and gray interior.
