Default GTS engine block

Hello -

I am new to this forum, but I am merely a new 928 owner. I have a problem regarding my GTS. The problem is that some second rated German so-called specialist (even recommended by the official network which to me is quite absurd - if anyone wants to know their name, let me know. Or, I might as well just post their name, anyone might know who they are) have destroyed the block of this car by replacing the alusil coating with steel. (without modifying/changing pistons/pistonrings) My problem (or rather their problem, but that's a long story involving solicitors, mechanics and other various knowledgeable people) is that it needs replacing and it might be a problem sourcing another GTS block. So, does anyone here know if it is possible to use a GT/S4 block (while preserving the 5.4 litre volume) which is far easier to come by?!

Regards Ola Nigard, Sweden

Hi Ola,

good move to seek information here, theres a lot of knowledge shared on this forum.
I'm not the person to answer your question but I'm sure there are others with better knowledge in this area.

Cheers/Peter

Isn't the block the same? I beleive the 5.4 litre was accomplished with a stroker crank not boring.

Others smarter than me will chime in.

The block is basicly the same between an S4/GT and GTS. Erkka posted some great pictures recently of the minor differences (crankcase breathing and oil passages I think).

tom, the pics showed both notches in the lower cradle for con rod clearance and also breather holes between the crank main bearing supports. it stands to reason that if an S4 can be stroked to 6.0 litres then it can be stroked (with a factory GTS crank) to 5.4, and this is what many people have acomplished.

So why then did Porsche put the notches in the cradle? If the 6.0 stroke clears on the regular block? why would a 5.4 stroke not clear on the GTS block?

later,
Tom

Two links to previous conversations with few pictures:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/180221-so-i-think-i-bought-a-gts-crank.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/166224-block-build-and-use-dates.html

There are few differences to S4/GT block. Factory added three holes next to each main bearings so that air can pass to next chamber when piston comes down. Lower part has small cuts for connecting rods on both sides. Cuts for the rods should be easy to make. Three holes might be more difficult as surrounding areas is different in older casting. Especially where those plugs attach at rear of block. I wouldn't settle for S4/GT.

I might have source for unused spare GTS block in Germany. It's expensive but if you do not have to pay yourself...

AFAIK there are two different ways to get 5.9-6.0 out of 5.0 block. 104mm pistons or stroker crank. Chevy conrods in stroker crank will very likely require cuts to lower half when 968 pistons do not.

Thanks for all the helpful advices. So I believe it might then be best to try to source a GTS block. Or, I could try to use the current one with a new bore?

The German "specialist" is called "Sportwagen Eckert" - does anyone know them?

Hej Ola!

I spoke to Claes today and he mentioned the progress. Sorry to hear that the work has been done so badly but it is good that there is some progress!
