A friend of mine makes custom glass packs he uses inside SS exhaust tips. When he wants full blown WWAAAAA he takes out the "glass pack" and has wide open pipes. When he wants quiet, he inserts the pack. With the pack installed it sounds almost stock. Slick setup I hope he agrees to make me a set someday.

Tony you're a trip! You come up with some wild ideas-
Anyway, good idea. I know what you're up to...here's what S4 cats look like. I guess they have inspection in Nevada?
Sorry about the condition of the garage- this was right after the hurricane and I hadn't swept out the leaves yet.

Just got back from my welder.
I took some zip strip to them and got the red paint off. Took all but 20 minutes.
Measured the bypass pipe for the overall finished length, then cut the ends off.
The glass packs slipped right over the test pipe and then were welded in.
I decided to orientate the openings in the packs forward, INTO the exhaust stream. My goal was to take the edge off the test pipe and RMB sound.
Ill find out how it sounds in a few hours
Looks good IMHO! With the air pump fitting intact, they look like a set of cats!

Tony,
Look'n good! I did the same thing with a set of factory cats. Cut off the cats and welded glass paks. I called the factory who makes the glass paks about how the cutouts are to be oriented and they said to put the open part to the back so they flow easier. That's what I did and they sound and work great. Not much loader than stock but an awesome throaty rumble when you get on it. I'd upload a pic if I could figure out how to do it...

That looks really good. In the no start thread you said you're disconnecting the airpump. Are you leaving the air pipe on for the illusion that it's legal, or have you just not removed it yet? Are the glass packs steel?

Tony- you know...a set of regular S4 cats would work just perfect under your car, and would end any sort of inspection problem.
-I'm not advocating cats this time. I removed my plugged cats and installed an Ott X-pipe that I managed to finagle off of Ebay....and I was totally surprised how easy this job was. I bought a pipe cutter from Pep-Boys, and had the exhaust off in 30 minutes [I'm not kidding- 30 minutes!]. Since the Ott is clamped on, I could conceivably re-cat my car in the same 30 minutes. Yes, you'd have to spend an hour prior to each inspection R&R'ing your pipes...but if you just kept a set of cats in your garage...then you could run an X pipe full time and ditch the redneck mufflers. How much horsepower does an X-pipe add?

Sure! After i weld it all up i read that!
Wouldnt be too hard to cut them off and turn them around...not in the near future though. Other projects now.
Anyway, they sound really good and the packs took the raspy sound off the test pipes. I have a very nice rumble at idle and cruise, WOT its perfect..... and of course the sucking "woosh" from my engine sounds like its go to suck the hood through the intake system
I left the airpump fitting on becasue it was part of the original test pipe when i bought it. I just plugged the end so i dont get exhaust flow going up the tube. If it adds to the "illusion" so be it. If it passes next year, it passes. If it doesnt, it doesnt and i put the cats back on for a week. I already know my car passes the sniffer without the cats from a test i did last year...its only the visual that trips me up and thats only when they decide to look.
Good little mod for those that dont care for the "raspiness" of the original testpipe. 20 bucks for both glass backs and 20 to weld them up.
