sorry Jim ..flexplate...

It sounds as if the flywheel is rubbing the block or something....

But ill call you..i dont understand this stuff...I can do minor stuff but this car is way out of my league.

Ive got to prepare to sell it...how much would this thing be worth?????

Sorry about the car, whatever the damage may be. Hopefully fixable. If you have only had the car one week, and purchased from a dealer, check if the laws in you state give a 30 or 90 day warranty on used cars. You may have some recourse with the selling dealer. This is definitely not a good first 928 experience.

I guess I was close enough huh. I believe there are 2 flex plates on the AT's at both ends of the TT for the most part. If it is the one in the bell housing, I don't think it would be too tough of a fix....providing that's all the problem is. Either one, can be replaced by you. There are enough folks here to guide you through the process.

Another question is who did you take the car to? Do they know 928's? Did they explain why they believe this is the failure and describe to you how it all works? What about the POP in the rear?

Its at a well known porsche mechanic in charlotte... Does alot of 928's

He explained everything to me in detail today...but ill have the actual quote tomorrow.

i am usually not an advocate of troublemaking, but 1 wk. and catastrophic mechanical failure? contact seller. do not accuse. be amicable but firm. let him split the repair with you. if no warranty you can still have recourse! you owned her only one week! a small claims judge would hang him due to the extensive amount of damage just on that. if you signed anything that said no warranty expressed or implied etc. not alot you can do. if he won't work it out with you, post the details on all forums and see how many more porsches he sells. then again he could be a great guy. anyway i don't know if i'm right about anything but don't give up on your 928.

It was a lucky guess...switch the safety back on that thing! lol

On the bright side, it's easier to fix than tearing into an engine...IF, this is as far as it goes and no engine problems.

I still want to know what the initial sound was from the rear end.

I'd guess sound traveling in a weird way, but maybe some sort of backlash in the system when the flexplate and such let go. With the torque converter as a buffer in between, I wouldn't think the tranny or axles could be damaged.

That's a great attitude Dave, and shows what kind of guy you are. A deal is a deal, and if you do not feel mislead, how could it be his fault.

I feel for you dude. I had a thrust bearing failure. It was expensive and an adventure. Sometimes I think I should have just sold the car. But now, the car runs great and I've had no problems. Its all paid for and now I'm glad I kept it. In the long run, I probably would have spent more money buying a new car and wouldn't have been as satified. Even my wife has gotten over being pissed about the repair. She bought me some P stuff for Christmas. Now I'm even considering going all out an putting a SC on it.

After you get over the shock of the repair estimate, take a deep breath and don't do anything right away. If its not a daily driver, then you have time to decide what to do.

Heres the final diagnosis..Its not "Thrust Bearing Failure"


At some point in the past the tranmission was removed...when it was put back in the shaft was moved forward and too much presuure was applied to the flexplate and it wore out the main bearings....(thr short version) The ONLY way to this would ld have been corrected was to do the main bearings and get everything back to the way it should be. But now after the failure..other parts could be damaged.

Now it needs main bearings set and no telling what else untill they open it up. Ill have the numbers in a while.
