Dave my targa is the twin of yours, it's just an '81. Before you cost it out you should determine the problem. It can't cost you any more to just bring her home and start diagnosing at this point. Also won't cost a dollar to open the engine up and look. I would be tempted to buy the car from you because I think Cassis is a gorgeous colour, but you need to help yourself before you toss the car to the wolves.
Flywheels do not break.
Torque tubes do not affect the engine's idle or running.
Flexplates I suppose may affect it, and grind, but usually this can be inspected (flywheel as well) by removing the cats (EASY) and looking through the inspection hole.
Engine: can be expensive. May be worth your while in this case to just replace it, if it is toast.

I hope not..the Belt was just done less than 5000 miles ago... I d HAVE to let it go as is if its a belt failure....Theres NO way I can do it.

$2,000 - Pull and replace complete engine and sell old one for parts <edited>
$3,000 to 5,000 - replace with good used engine, yours totally destroyed
$500 - only belt and pump and rollers needed (unlikely)
$2,200 - belt, pump, rollers, both banks of valves needed

I certainly hope it is the lesser of what we all speculate. It is funny how the language barrier begins as soon as we start to describe car sounds. The guy who describes it the best, usually gets the closest prognosis.

Well...The verdict is in....Its BAD.....
Flexdisk/thrust bearing problem....
Will need new Thrust bearing and main bearings..(small chance a new flexplate).posibly a torque tube. No way to tell untill they tear into it.
Looks like I have to sell it as-is..I dont have the resources to do this repiar myself,(pulling a motor etc) or pay to have it done.
Im getting 2 quotes tomorrow...1 if they can fix it in the car..and the other if they have to pull the motor. This doesnt include the misc things they could find like a TT among other things.. Probably around $3000 or more.

We know of a guy here in Michigan who had the same failure. Another reason why all you AT people out there should make this part of your annual maintenance!

OK I am a little more confused than usual. First I do not know what a flexdisc is ,second when the thrust bearing surface on the main bearing fails it does so over time and the engine will not crank over on the starter motor when it gets hot. Dave phone me as soon as you have quotes and we can talk about it...........IF you broke the triangular carrier (flex)plate which bolts to the flywheel and the central driveshaft the car would not move and it would make noise BUT should not hurt the bearings inside the engine. This may not be terminal !!
