Say...I got to looking at old car listings (I have a stack since I've been looking for another 928 and trying to get a better feel for values) and Dave's car looks very much like one sold last summer by Exclusive Motors www.exclusive-motors.com. I don't want to cause Dave any embarassement but is there a chance that this could be the same car? That's a pretty uncommon color isn't it? Beautiful car. Shame it died so quick (and so badly).

Exclusive Motors has an '87 928 about that color listed on their web site as having been sold earlier. 83K miles. They also show another sold 928 that looks the same but had 44k miles (Maybe that color isn't so rare?) They sell a lot of Porsches it appears. Even Lambos. Has anyone had experience with this company?

Jim B. . . As you know I recently had the trans rebuilt and I just wanted to know if my flex plate back there was looked at? When the trans is out, you can see the plate? Thanks

The flexplate we have been discussing is the one bolted to the flywheel at the back of the engine NOT the torque convertor input "carrier plate" which is inside the front cover of the transmission in the rear of the car. Removing and rebuilding your transmission the shop probably never touched the front carrier plate"flex plate" simply left it where it was. So the probable answer is the shop never looked at your front flexplate to check for too much preload. It would be good to drop the lower bell housing cover at the engine and loosen the allen head clamping bolt to be sure that the drive shaft has NOT pulled back through the hub and is now pushing the crank forward ..........go check some of the tips......... The crankshaft end play starts out in the range .06 to .192 mm with a wear limit of .40 mm .

they have a good rep, this is a quote from another 928 they have on ebay

Exclusive Motors feels really bad about the problem and have presented several options all of which are acceptable.

We have worked out a solution.

Just thought id let everyone know it is now resolved.

(sorry it took so long for me to post...I havent been following this board the last few days.)

So Dave, were the now-deleted accusations made earlier true? Was it a preexisting condition that Exclusive knew about? I don't want to mudsling, but I would like to know if passing the buck is part of their business practices. I'm on their mailing list, and have considered buying from them. I don't want to end up with a headache you've had. On a different note, I am joyed to hear that they were willing to work with you on a resolution to the problem; please give us some more details on that arrangement.

Its been taken care of.

They did not know about the problem. And have been more than accommodating. And have come up with acceptable solutions.

I don't question the integrity of exclusive motors. They are stand up guys.

Gary Knox and I purchased this car from Dave with the intention of furthering the study of TBF and hopefully some advise on how to prevent Thrust Bearing Failure.

We will be restoring the mechanicals and selling the car. We will try to keep you up to date. The body and interior are in excellent condition with a few issues that will be corrected.
The engine runs, but it sounds like the torque converter flex plate has self destructed. We will be pulling the engine and trans next week. The crank end play is .060" or 1.5MM. Max alowable is .016", so the thrust bearing is toast. The front hub was NOT Loctited. The hub was not pushed forward, but there is evedence of the flex plate being pressed against the flywheel at one time. It is common practice for local independent shops to release the front pinch bolt to reposition the hub and release the pressure against the crank, but not do the Loctite Fix to prevent this migration. Since we developed the Loctite Fix in 1999 or 2000, I have never heard of TBF on a car that had applied it. This is the second car that I know of that has had TBF without the Loctite Fix. I am going to start a page on my web site devoted to TBF prevention, hopefully today.
