jp, if you look through the discussions about pumps, there are arguments for both. A plastic impeller will not damage the block. Metal impellers come apart less often, but can damage or even destroy a block. I'd rather have plastic.

If you're worried about the steel one coming off, have a machinist stick a stainless roll pin through it. Then it won't move rearward unless you grenade a WP bearing.

With iron rotors its not so much the rotor coming loose on the shaft as the shaft bearing going out and allowing enough movement for the rotor to contact the block.
I wasnt endorsing the choice of iron only pumps, just reporting it as one position on the matter. The pump I put in 3 years ago happens to be an iron rotor (this was before I knew about the possibility, or had a choice) as was the pump that came out. I think that if the pump bearing goes out you will get water loss pretty quickly as the seal loses contact, and the essence is to STOP driving and fix it before damage is done. A properly set up belt should not overload a pump bearing to failure point too often?

I do believe that is correct. We read of, and experience, many failures. But I've seen NO failures that are not a direct result of lack of, or improper, maintenance.

Congratulations to Normy for the diagnosis.

Now is the time to read up Wally's Cam Belt write up, several times, and check that your mechanic is doing exactly what he should be, including tensioner rebuild, and retension after 1,500 miles.

I also recommend that you take pics of your sprockets and post them here for an opinion as to whether they need to be replaced, otherwise your new belt may last much much less than 40,000 miles.

Final update. Thanks for all your valuable info. Car has new water pump fitted, steel impellors and new cambelt. Running normal temp in testing. Mechanic says fingers crossed on head gasket and I need to bring the car back in in 2k for cambelt re-tightening. Ewen

Get a set of WSM's, and use the Renn/links/archives next time for the belt/pump/tensioner/rollers.
$50.00 US gets you the tension check tool.
Your wrench may not be a rip-off just in experienced re: 928's. If you still have both arms and legs
he is truly a babe in the woods re: cost of repair.
You can do this! You won't have to mess around with the TB, pump, rollers/tensioner for quite a while
if the job has been done right. Though a re-tension check on a yearly basis can't hurt anything. There are sites, links and archival 'how to's' with flicks all over the place and Renn members will be more than willing to walk you thru the procedure. So read-up on this and other subjects and prepare yourself to be a wrenching enthusiast. Remember, once upon a time... SEX WAS SCARY, TOO!
P.S.
Use the Greg Nichols site for a winning average on diagnostics.
Fear not, most of us have walked in your shoes.

Hi Ewan

I recommend that you befriend Jon928se who is moving to NZ very shortly, he is taking two 928s with him (as well as his wife). He is extremely generous and knowledgable and will probably save you a small fortune with his advice. I will miss him when he leaves London.

You should also look up Nick Mckenna who ran a 928 used parts enterprise in the UK before moving to NZ recently (unless I'm getting confused and he moved to Oz). Finally, look out for Paul Smith who is definitely in NZ and a very experienced 928 owner and fixer.

Nick is here in Oz with us Landsharkers, with one mobile 928. Sadly he recently found work and is now a slave to the clock, instead of the shark!

I will read with interest topics about the 928's. I think they are an awesome car and I plan to keep mine long term. The classic car mag here in NZ puts in estimated prices for classic cars - included is the 928. The Xmas edition suggested good condition 928 is valued at $NZ60k (we are at .70 to $US1). Now I think that is too high but I certainly sense 928 prices are on the up as a collectible.

Hi,
Ritchiee - I was born in Dunedin and had a townhouse in Churton Park at one stage. Where do you live? My in-laws live at Island Bay

My Nephew in Dunedin has a 928 (ex Japan) that he may wreck - contact me privately if you wish

As you can see I now live in OZ in Nth Qld's Tropics at Airlie Beach

Regards
Doug
