Default difficult decisions, need some opinions..

hey all,

Well, it looks like at some point in the near future i will have to sell my project 928. Its a cold reality but with the recent loss of employment, and the very small field i work in, jobs are rare and difficult to find, and theres a very good chance ill have to relocate when i do find one..so unfortunately, unless something amazing happens in the next month or two, one of the the things tht makes the most sense to me is let the 928 go..
What im struggling with now is value. ive redone the interior, and its like a whole different car, far from perfect, but so much better in so many ways . ive fixed a bunch of smaller items like interior lights, door checks, the head lights now function properly except one bulb it out, which ill get to as well .
mechanically , it has the upgraded "big red" brakes, "test pipe" rebuilt trans and torque tube, ansa exhaust, and a number of other improvements. But it also has a bad head gasket, and will need a water pump and the manditory front end service (it was done a couple years back, but should be done again during the h/g R&R "just in case") . The car starts and runs, roughly, and can be moved. i havent found signs of antifreeze in the oil so i think im okay there, not positive though... the body is fairly nice, has a ding in the hood, and a dent in the right rear quarter near the gas door, dent in the low front spoiler as well. the paint is "okay" but not great.. it will need some other small things, like a hatch "catch" (the plastic lip is worn off and it wont secure properly.) a radio , etc..
Im guessing it will cost me somewhere between $500 and $800 , doing the work myself to get into reliable , driving condition. But if i sold it right now , as is, i think i can "break even" in the $1500-$1800 range, maybe..

So what im trying to figure out is if im better off selling as is, or risking my now limited resources in completing the repairs. I really cant see a way at the moment to hang onto the car though, either way im going to have to part with it, albeit reluctantly, but ive just got too many other things to worry about. i just want to go about it the best way, and dont want to invest the money and time into it if ill still only end up breaking even or possibly loosing money on it..

so i could use some advise to help me decide if should sell it as it sits now, or risk completing the repairs and hope to make a few dollars in the end?

with a blown headgasket it might be hard to sell at all to anyone but a complete enthusiast.

I'd sell. It will cost you more than you think.

You have higher priorities now. There will be time for 928's later. Sell it for what you can get and focus on finding the right job. Good luck.

Id sell it ...Or (gasp) part it... usually i hate to see things parted, but if times are tough, you may have to. As someone mentioned above, thats a tough sell with a headgasket probem. If I had to guess(and i am by no means an expert) It will cost you ALOT more than the car is "worth" to a buyer.

Try selling it as is. I suspect you can get out of it without loosing more than a few hundred bucks. Unless you can really see that you will have time and space to get it back together do not take it apart. If you pull it apart and cannot get it back together because you do not have time or the repair is more complicated than you thought it will be harder to move. I would not suggest parting it because if you get in the middle of the process and have to move you will have a real problem. If you do end up with time and space to tackle the problem then I would agree with your estimate to fix it...if it is a 16V car. Perhaps even a little less if you only have to do one side. Also, you might consider picking up a used motor on ebay and going with that. There are lots of project 928s out there and you should not have trouble getting another one. One thing to consider would be to change the brakes back and sell the big reds seperatly.

There's a guy on-list that will buy any 16V 928, pretty much like me with the 32V and later. I bet he'd take it off your hands ... name's RIXTER

Punt , there are more people walking around with $1,500-1,800 than with $2,500-2,800. It still starts and runs which is enough to make some people optimistic. Good luck with the job search concentrate all your resources on that.

Sometimes it seems like it can cost money to get out of it. My garage is full, but Rixter to the rescue. Heinrich is too far away to grab it..

I'm in Fort Lauderdale, and until I sell the place...Orlando. How many $ are you looking for?

Looks like a cool airport car/parts hog/eventual project....and the big brakes would be cool on my S2!
