What is she worth
A buddy of mine has this '86 928s for sale. I can get some better pics this weekend but it was dark out.
He is asking $6500. To my knowledge the car is in great running condition and only has 81,000 miles on it. I will be checking it out myself Sat. I am a 944 guy so I have no idea what the market is for one of these.
Interior looked real good in the dark and it is an automatic.

Looks like it has the stadard bumper cover faded paint syndrome like my Guards Red 928. Has the timing belt/water pump been done? Interior condition? 5sp or auto tranny? On '86 MY 928's the last for digits of the vin will indicate what brake and suspension package it has. 1-999 is early "S" package and 1000>up will have S4 brakes and suspension. The asking price is middle of the road for that car with marginal records and condition.

Have a Pre=purchase inspection done by a mechanic who has specific experience with 928s. If there is nothing or little wrong with the car, this might actually turn out to be a steal...
86 model - ideally with VIN ending higher than 1000, and no side moldings... Rims look clean, you say interior is good (check for crackks in the dash). If you like the colors, and the mechanics check out well, you should jump on it.

Be sure to check out the electrical system very carefully. 928's have electrical gremlins more than mechanical problems - and they can be very frustrating to chase down.
Run a CarFax as well to check for past wrecks, etc.

That asking price for a 86 1/2is a great purchase.
If he is willing to flog the sHARk with you as a passanger you can tell a lot about the car.
Like: If the TB has jumped already -under his ownership- with no cost to you. As well as
tranny and brake condition/performance.
Have him run thru the electrics: Parking light, fogs, brakes, turn signals, headlights,
door lights, hatch light, door jamb markers, Antenna, radio, wipers,-front and rear, washers,
seats, sunroof, heater, AC.
Engine should have a smooth idle between 550-725 rpm. If the idle is above 725 I'd wonder why?
I'd rather have a mild hunting condition than a high rpm situation that could be "hiding" something.
Check tire wear pattern for alignment issues.
For the asking price: if the TB hasn't jumped, it shifts/handles/brakes well. The electrics work,
you are satisfied with the paint and interior. Buy it!
The sHARk is 17/18 years old so expect a few glitches and blemishes.
Yeah, without documentation you would want to do a tensioner/roller/TB/H2O pump change
which isn't cheap but for the purchase price I would not expect the current owner to pick up the tab.
You'll want to do a fluid change engine & tranny radiator, and maybe flush the brake fluid.
There is an archive function on the Renn, the Greg Nichols site as well as a bunch of lister sites with BTDT step by step info some with flicks to help you thru almost any 'issue'.
Be diligent but not nit- picky. We seek perfection but seldom attain it.
As to the 861/2 ... Try it, you'll like it!
Jesus! Only $6500.00 .

Read through the New Visitor FAQ topic above for links to info on what to look for when buying a 928.
Make sure the mechanic doing the inspection is very familiar with 928s - these cars are radically different from all other Porsche models.
All used cars look better when it is dark...
