Default New auto in early car

For those of you in the know, can I do this, I plan on buying another wreck, this wreck will have PSD, that I will need to convert my car. The other car I'm restoring is a 85 euro automatic car. If I bought say a late model S4 or GTS to break up. Can I use the gearbox from this car to put in my 85? I wound change the valve body if I have to. I think that the shifting is electronically controlled in the S4 and beyond. I realise the PSD wont work in the auto car but this is of no consequence.

My 85 project car which I was planning on earning a few dollars for me is not looking good in that respect and a reco box is $2200 AUD with me doing the removal and install. I also need a blue interior that is an improvement over mine.

Any info appreciated.

Cheers

Porsche changed the floor pan as of GS 861000 it has a larger hump between the rear seats for the larger torque converter housing on the 87> trans but with a bit of persuasion (sledge hammer) you can get a late trans into the early floor pan. Be sure to get all the ABS stuff and axles front hubs off the wreck. The psd/abs brain box with the lateral acceleration meter is under the drivers seat.

Thanks Jim for your reply, Yes I believe the late model 4 speed will go in no trouble, the car is an 85 with a 4 speed now, it is just not got any electronic controls, it does have the gear indicator lights in the dash. I thought the only trouble with the actual physical fitting was the really early cars that had 3 speeds?

My question is more about will that late auto work in my 85? Are the valve bodies electronically controlled? Or was it just that the ingnition timing is retarded at the point of gearchange so that it is a smoother shift?
My other worry is the speedo? I thought these may come from the abs sensors as apposed to the magnetic pickup from the back of the diff. this part is not a worry for my PSD car, i.e is the car with the 5 spoke Carerra wheels and the GT gearbox, as all systems will be changed over, there should be compatibility.

Cheers and thanks

your 85 has the smaller bell on the front of the trans so clearance will be different with the late trans and NO 928 trans is controlled by computers, only the PSD differential slip for 1990> but only the slip none of the transmission functions . The trans protection switch in the trans tells the ignition brain to retard the ignition timing (87>)during the shifts. And yes the later cars use ABS input to drive the speedo left front hub then later one of the rear hubs as I recall.
