Default interior renovation, pics

ive been busy, still not done, but heres the current results of my 82 renovation projects;

there are peculiar "spots" in several pictures, turned out to be a dirty cam lense..

what i have so far, ill be felting the places where the seats were, as they were beyond saving (litterally fell apart as i removed them) the piece of carpet covering the rear hump was cut from the original hatch carpet(which was shot anyhow), i havent decided if i will keep it there yet. ill probably build storage compartments there anyhow, so its not crucial:

there is still much to do, including some touchup of the "new" interior, the seats, and many other smaller items, but im getting there and i like the the brown/black color combo (i left the sills black and just used the brown cover panels to tie it all together.) the misson continues........

Eric:

If you decide to install storage panels in the rear seat area, please post some pictures of the job. Since I have owned my car I have thought that to be the best use of that space (I don't have any children). I would be interested to know how you build the compartments, and if they have lockable access doors.
I like the raised lip edge of the seat backs because it holds parcels in place but it gets scuffed when large heavy boxes are dragged over it. I had planned to put a clear plastic edge guard in place in that area. Maybe we could both trade sketches to develop the best design.

How did you dye the console parts? Or did you simply use differenct colored
panels? I am about to order some SEM vinyl/leather dye but the color match process is lengthy and costly. Did you use another brand of dye (if you dyed any panels?). Will you keep the dash and pod black?

this is an extremely low budjet project, and as we all know, the lower the parts budget, the higher the labor time is. That being said, i was able to procure a great deal of the interior pieces from a fellow lister, for a very good price. the pieces i recieved were far from perfect however, and i spent a great deal of time repairing cracked mounting points, reinforcing door panels, reglueing carpet pieces, etc. my primary tools for it were a tube of two part epoxy,a can of spray adhesive, a large piece of abs plastic i scavenged some time ago from a junk yard out of a chevy (cut up to mend broken plastic bits) and some misc. washers, duct tape, and hardware i had laying around in my bin of "culch." i spent a day and a half cleaning and repairing the "new" center console alone, including some respraying with "grip and gaurd" rubberized texture spray paint.
i have two boxes of rit dye on hand for the carpets, but i havent needed them yet. in many cases, the old parts were better than the "new" ones, and i just swapped and reglueds carpet or trim pieces.
i spent allot of time disassembling and rebuilding the switches as well(console,mirror,seats,etc..)
i reinforced one lower door panel with elmers glue (made to a paste) and duct tape to add rigidity. not the best solution, but workable (fiberglass resin wouldve been better, but i had none on hand.)
i cleaned and lubed sevel small motors in the seats to rid them of corrosion and get them going again, still have two more to do..
the biggest problem was that this car was a rain bucket for awhile, the body held up well, but the hardware and soft panels didnt, ive saved what i could, but the trash can is full..
so the sum total is the best parts of two interiors, ive still allot to do, and i havent even started on the mechanicals yet, but this 928 will live again..its not so much love, its the challenge..the love might come later after i can drive it, who knows.. but bad interiors are my biggest pet peeve, so thats where i started

door pull refinish:
original was painted, poorly, sanded it lightly first to remove the crud,

then painted it with this stuff,

and now it looks like this,


then i started thinking about the storage area where the seats were. nothing to loose by pulling apart the old seat backs, so heres a pic of the components of the rear seat backs;



each side has a hinge and a pin, which i removed and bolted to a piece of plywood i cut for the purpose;


i also transplanted the locking release, and installed the unit;





several problems arose from trying install a single piece cover, the hinge pins are nearly impossible to install in the keepers, the hinges themselves dont want to line up right, i had to cut slots in order to clear the inner pin mounts.
i think the best solution at this point is to revert to a two piece unit, with left and right sides, that should alleviate most of the problems. there willbe some problems with getting the pieces right one there upholstery on them as well, as they wont mate up perfectly..ill figure that out as i go. ill also build "fronts" for them , to enclose the boxes. im not very good with carpentry work, so this is all trial and error, well more error than trial, but ill get there....

Looks good....keep up the good work.I'm doing the same for my 79.I found a low milage flood car at the salvage yard late last summer and bought the whole interior out of it for 100 bucks.I'm doing the reglue and recover on dash and console right now and when car comes out of the paint shop I'll install it all at one time.I've already redone a set of 8 way power seats out of a 88.Only difference is I'm going from brown to black.

got a little bit more done today, slow going since im in R&D mode right now..

i built a rear console out of some scrap pine, and leftovers. it has a covered storage compartment, a small open compartment, and an enclosed compartment that is DIN sized (think dvd player later on ) , right now it has a cover plate and 12v oulet (piece was from an olds i think, another parts bin reject) .


then i split the rear cover i made previously, when its upholstered, it should lay flush witht he rear console when closed. i still need to contour it and add finished edges, but htis should give the basic idea im following. i used black carpet (leftovers) and its a bit hard to see, but i used a bigger [pic and maybe thatll help...







i still need to change out those ss screw heads (too prominant,) do the otherside, and build frontside enclosures and framing..wiring as well , including lighting (open the compartment, light goes on) ...

BTW: i really appreciate the encouragement and kind words offered above, thanks folks!!

Talking Just what I needed

First time poster, here. Thanks Eric, this post was just what I needed! I just moved back to Tulsa after 16 years in New York City where I had an 800 square foot house and only street parking, so one of the first things I did when I got back was start to look for an old 928. They came out the year I graduated high school and I have always wanted one but the only way I could afford it was to wait for them to get old and restore one. I found a 79 for the right price (cheap) and began the journey.

When I got down to sheet metal on the inside I stopped and looked around at the piles that were once the interior and thought "WOW, I'm in WAY over my head!". Now I have the leather and vinyl 98% redyed (Leatherique), have the Sliverknit carpet and dash/pod caps on order (Fryer's), have the 1/4 windows removed (seals were shot) and am starting to sort out the wheels and tires. The PO (I'm slowly getting the acronyms) threw in an extra set of moondials but between the 8 rims I think I have three different sizes/offsets, OY!

I still need to find a center console, front light bars and about a ton of new interior screws and clips but now at least the light at the end of the tunnel ain't a train! I've gotten a lot of sources by lurking here but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I plan on doing most of the maintenance type work myself but the initial "get it up to snuff" work was too overwhelming so I took it to a local shop (Tom Charlesworth, current or former PCA muckety-muck, got many good references).

I can't wait to get it back and, hopefully before I'm 80, be driving my own shark! Thanks for the unknowing encouragement.

I am one of those "many good references", as he helped me out of a jam once while I was in Oklahoma at a Porsche Parade in my 914/6. I would say your 928 is in good hands.

Nice job!

I was going to recommend adapting the rear storage bins from an 86-91 Mazda Rx-7, as they lay flat, are pretty deep, come with locks - and are cheap and plentiful. But you got deep into the woodworking already, which I got to admit is looking good.

thanks for the compliments, unfortunately theres a very high chance im going to have to sell this 928 in the very near future, as i was informed today im no longer employed. i have mortgage payments to make, and my reserves wont hold out very long..it will need head gaskets, and some other small things , but overall , its a great car.. even has upgraded brakes and spoiler.. im still going to try and finish the work ive started...
if anyone needs a top level security manager with extensive experience in both the retail sector, and private (estate) security, as well as investigations, executive protection, and a host of other related skills (15 years experience) please dont hesitate to drop me a note..
