Question Injector Cleaner OK for Winter Storage?

I apologize if this has been already dealt with recently but I've heard that it's not good to store 928's with Techtron Injector Cleaner in the system as it's hard on rubber. Would that be a problem for routine winter storage (2-3 months)?

I don't drive my 928 in the winter but I do crank it at least weekly just to hear it run and to keep things all lubed up so I hope I'll be OK with Techtron. I let it run about 30 minutes then shut her down. Would doing this cause any problems with carbon buildup or anything?

Gracias,

Harvey

Harvey, the preferred chemical for storage is a fuel stabilizer - e.g. "STA-BIL."

I too have heard that Techron is not good for long-term storage.

The subject of how to not drive your 928 for the winter has been much debated. I have had my '91 for eight years now and rarely drive it in the winter. In fact it is outside right now, under a cover, under one foot of snow. (Oh! The horror! Yes - a 928 sitting in the snow. The garage is hosting the GTS and the '89 at the moment. There's also an '87 under a cover (under snow) behind the garage...)

Here's what I do every winter. My '91 is none worse for the wear:

- Fill the tank
- Add STA-BIL and follow the directions
- over-pressure tires by 6-8 PSI
- plug in a battery maintainer or disconnect the battery

Optionally:

- change oil
- cover car if it's going to be outside (see car cover discussions for opinions...)
- plug exhaust and intake if you have rodent problems (my three Killer Kitties deal with rodentia)

During the Months of Hibernation, I make plans to drive the car about once per month and wait for a dry-road day. During these drives I make sure the car reaches and maintains operating temperature for 15 to 30 minutes, I operate the front (and rear) A/C, and all other accessories.

What I would not do is:

- idle the car for 30 minutes weekly (sorry.)

Why?

- 30 minutes of idling is not likely going to allow the car to reach true operating temperature if it is cold. In sub-freezing weather my '91 will not truly warm up just sitting. In fact, even cruising at 65 mph it will not truly warm up. It needs several WOT blasts to 80+ to get it warm (heh, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.... officer.)

- you are only keeping the engine bits 'lubed up' - the transaxle, steering rack, wheel bearings, etc., are just sitting there.

- the frequent warm-up cycles will accelerate varnishing of your injectors. Techron won't help with that as much as you think.

One more thing: I have ALL-SEASON tires for those dry-road winter days. Summer Performance tires and cold pavement is a recipe for body damage.

Speaking about summer tires, this thread (edited with pics deleted) is about a 944 guy out in the snow on summer tires that bounced his car off a couple guard rails in the recent Boston area snow...not good.

There are five snow lumps in my driveway. Some are 928s. Some are not. We'll have to wait for a thaw to get a recount.

I heard all those 928s (and the other lumps) are 5 speeds.....Automatics are not equally represented in your automotive administration? Recount!!
I think a 928 get together at your house is in order for the spring. Parking on the lawn. That would really freak out the neighbors.
