Thanks for the tip....but I've never had a problem with the smog pump going on 86K miles now...No one mentioned to replace the pump while doing the belt. I will be listening closely for any noise coming from down below.

Bill - I checked the tensioner this morning and it's not leaking anything after turning the crank a few times to check...I will proceed with putting everything back together and watch for leaks...I'm hoping the tensioner was just over-fillled and I don't have to replace the gasket and boot again. I also filled it according to the instructions.

Thanks for sharing - Vasilis

I'll jump in here. 89K on an '85. When I did the TB, I gave the smog pulley a turn and it was rough, catching in one spot during the rev. I took it off, opened it up. It is typically overengineered, but what do I know. The two vanes have shims on the ends to make it more efficient. Apparently the bearings are ok. It was these shims that were rubbing inside the inner chamber. BUT like the previous poster, now that I have this thing in my hands I think I will replace it just in case. There is a writeup on Nichols describing replacing the bearings but it is hard to follow. I don't have tools to press out bearings (there are two more smaller ones inside that inner chamber) and a real mechanic said it needs a "feeler gauge" to set properly. A rebuilt w/core return is $150. So I think it is not the bearings, but this shim mod Porsche designed into the pump. HTH

Smog pump job is easy, and my rebuilt cost $50 after core return. I bought mine at PartsHeaven (Unfortunately they are closed till Monday). I did a writeup on the swap here.

The price for the rebuilt I quoted was from 928 "Ubernational" catalogue. I will check my part number and contact your supplier.
