Gas Cap Anyone?

Gas Cap Anyone?
For the first time in my 23 years of automobile ownership, I left my gas cap at the gas station yesterday. I knew that I had a tough day at work, but I guess I didn't realize how tough. I am going to go back to the gas station to see if someone turned it in but I am not too confident.
In case I am unsuccessful, any one have an 'extra' one or will I need to cough up the $75 - $150 to one of the big brothers?

Check the side of the road as it leaves the gas station. I have had a couple people find their cap intact at the edge of the road. It may have fallen off at your first turn ! Good luck .

Someone a long time ago on the email list recommended to always use the lock on the cap. Then leave your key in the cap while you gas up. That way you won't leave without the cap. Works for me! Plus I'm paranoid about leaving the key in the car with the door closed in case the electronics decide to take control....

Good idea John. I left mine at a Chevron station in West, TX and didn't notice until I got home in Irving - 90 miles away. I always save the receipt to write my mileage on. I got the station address from the receipt, got their number from directory assistance and called them up. Sure enough, they had the cap and saved it for me until I got back down there to pick it up. I offered the girl $20 for keeping it for me but she refused. Cameron - I'll bet someone turned in your cap. Most people are basically good and honest.

John, that is a great idea and one that I too use. My wife used to think I had some kind of goofy ritual that I performed everytime I got gas. (always leaving the keys in the cap lock) Until... guess who was driving the car alone and stopped for gas, pulled on the door handle and the electricals decided to lock the doors. Not so funny anymore. Thank God for AAA and probably an ex-car thief tow truck driver. Only seconds to get the door open. Still don't know how he did it.

FlyingDog,
You called it. I could see the damn red thing from a distance as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. Right there on top of the pump, 24 hours later. I put my key in it and cycled it just to be sure - yeah like there are alot of cars that have gas caps that look like ours.
Tom,
No need to reply to my email.
Thanks!
