have them in my 89. had them in the old track car and i have 3 sets sitting in my shop.
my experience on the s4's was an increase in low end torque being the most obvious effect (306 ft lbs on the 89 pre s/c) with an increase of both torque and hp over the entire range though not dramatic.
928 specialists has some dyno curves on their site pre and post install done at the frenzy at autothority a couple of years ago.

Hey Tom
Do they rasie the rev limiter? If so, to what?
found it.
it would be nice to get through 60mph in 1st gear with out kissing the limiter.

revs quickly before reaching the raised rev limiter. The rev limiter has been raised 300 RPM in each gear and there is no top speed limiter

I have them on my 87' S4. Much smoother power delivery across the band, especially lower rpm, and noticeable increased in power.
I know i could shave some more time off 0-60mph if i could power through 60mph rather than catching the tail end of a shift into 2nd gear.
Andy, wasnt this somehting we had talked about when you took me for a ride? Have you tried it..or chips yet?
thanks

How hard is it to put those bad boys in? I see that 928 Specialists have "instructions" but they don't post them. I'd like to know what I'm getting into and whether I could accidentally destroy something expensive by doing it wrong...

I have a set of vertex chips in my 85 5spd supermodel. There simple to install one for the fuel side and one for the ignition side of the computer. 1hr max to install. The only thing that can be done wrong is not lining the notches in the chips up with the marks on the board, which will short out the chips only. The one concern is they advance timing so there's more chance of detonation. But I can get 100 octane at the pump here. With 285/35 rears I can do 0-60 in 1st at 6200rpm. The snow here in Buffalo is the only thing preventing me from beating Andy's 0-60 time.

Takes less than an hour IIRC for my S4:
-- Disconnect the battery
-- Remove pass side package tray.
-- Remove pass footwell rugs and pads
-- Remove electrical connectors on the two boxes
-- unbolt the boxes together.
-- unbolt the boxes from each other and the support bracket
-- using a static-safe strap and a grounded workspace:
-- open each box
-- mark the old chips (in case you need to put them back later)
-- remove the old chips.
-- install the new chips.
-- close the boxes.
There are some detailed instructions on bending tabs, spacers and standoffs inside the boxes, and details on how to open the circiout boards in one box.
After all that, assembly is the reverse of disassembly.
Reconnect the battery, and you are good to go.

thanks for the reply!
With a 5spd you should be able to get there easily i think.

I put them in my 87 auto and I noticed a better jump off the line and I hold first gear until 6,000 RPM now instead of it shifting into 2nd at 5,500 or so. I am pretty pleased with them although I will change them back once I get a MURF S/C next spring.

eh, for the number of times i actually hit it. Im not thhaaat worried. I would just like to be able to drive through 60mph rather than catching a shift through it when need be . I can always take it out. Just would be interesting to try it.
