Default Looking-Transmission

Hi all,
I am looking for a manual transmission for a 1986 928S. This would be a conversion from automatic. So I could us any associated mounting brackets and hardware.

Thanks!

You might want to do a search on previous posts on that topic, it's been covered a few times (and been done even fewer). Couple websites mentioned therein give good information.

Randy it is not brave if you do not know what it is you should be afraid of. It is not that it is hard just hard to pay for !! flywheel bell housing clutch parts master cyl slave cyl hoses lines ,central tube/ drive shaft shifter shift linkage and a piece of firewall to mount the master cylinder to after it is glued riveted into the car and the transmission . A good late model 5 speed transmission is hard to find. The list totals thousands of dollars. The labor is 2-3 days if you have all the parts and know what you are doing.

Unless there is something v special about your 86, sell it and buy a 5 speed.

Next down the list is, when you buy a 928 make sure you like the interior color ... cos that is equally expensive to replace.

Its been done, but it is very expensive. I agree that if you must have a 5 speed then start searching for one & sell your auto. The costs of conversion vs a new vehicle is hard to justify. Plus you could upgrade to an S4 or GTS!

All true but I think it would be a very fun project. If I could find a complete 5spd setup I'd do it to my auto in the blink of an eye.

I did mine and it was the best thing I ever did. Of course that was three years ago and I've forgotten just how difficult it was. The really funny part was that where I live there were no 928s near by and I had never even seen what a manual transmission looked like. I kept getting these parts and laying them out on the workbench trying to figure out what bolted on to this or that and how the lines and linkage worked. The mechanics are pretty straight forward. The biggest issue was getting the bracket for the clutch master as on the 85-86 year cars there was no master bracket or hole in the firewall. The master is installed at a specific angle and location or else it will match up to the set clutch pivot point and would not operate. I was able to get a sectioned firewall sent to me and then I carefully drilled out all of the spot welds and determined alignment. Installing this bracket and the clutch master took more time than pulling out the rear suspension, existing automatic transmission and hardware. Keep in mind the bracket is under the brake master cylinder and you can not even see where it goes. If you have ever followed the threads about changing the master cylinder, just imagine having no Bracket!

I am a little manic and decided about 7 days before the first autocross of the year that I was going to go for it. (had been collecting the parts for several months) I know that on one particular stretch I had been awake for 40 some hours. I did this by myself on jackstands in my gargae.

Made the autocross though and won my class.

Enjoy the challenge.

Default We have a 5 spped for conversion...

My son has a complete 5 speed with linkage that might work which came with our 1982 928. The transmission was not new but overhauled...

An 82 transmission would work, but it will not have the better syncrhos and you would need to use a same year torque tube which is 10 mmm longer than that for an 86 as well as the early year shifter linkage.

Regards,

Ken
