Default Pentosin Motor Oil

Hey, just thought I'd post a thread about this company that is now becoming more popular among the Porsche, VW, Audi, Mercedes, and BMW circles. I also drive an X5 besides the '91 I have, and my mechanic has told me to look at the numbers and wanted me to try it my X5. He has put in the 100% synthetic 5-40 just about 600 miles ago. I am told this oil is a 'superoil' like AMsoil that should last 20K miles (even though I still change at 3K intervals), and that there is no burn-off or deposits. Just wanted to see if there was anyone else on this forum who has heard of the stuff. Previously they have made all the hydraulic/brake/transmission fluids for all these makes. I certainly don't want to bring up the debate of synthetic vs. conventional, and I'm not trying to sell anything. I'd rather just put the best oil in my car, even if it can last much longer than my change interval.

Best regards,

Wino

I hope their motor oil isn't priced as outrageously as the hydraulic fluid that BMW specifies for the power steering/self leveling system on my 740iL.

Default It's not cheap

Yep, the AT fluid for my X5 is $25/qt...luckily I think it only calls for 7 quarts or something like that. This stuff is currently priced at $8/qt. but should be cheaper, when my mechanic is able to purchase in bulk. Like I said, he says the BMW literature claims this to be fantastic, just like the rest of the fluids they make. There are applications for Porsche, (not sure about the 928), so I thought I'd check with the latest on this board. It's been a while since I visited, so it's nice to be back.

Wishing everyone a Happy Holidays,

Roland

Default No one's heard of Pentosin?

Well by the lack of response, I'm assuming that nobody is running Pentosin in any of their cars. I'll see what I can find out, and continue to run it in my X5 until the next change and see what the breakdown looks like. I'm certainly not pushing anyone to use it, just wanted to gain some more info.

I'd rather run a better oil and change too often, and can't help but think that dyno oil is not as good in flow and protection as synthetic.

Thanks

I've never heard of it. Porsche to my knowledge still specify only Mobil One. I use only Mobil One and am very pleased with it. Of course I don't single-handedly run testing at General Motors, but I think even our resident self-proclaimed Einstein agrees.

Thanks Doug, great article. I'm going to do a little fluid exchange.

Best regards, and Merry Xmas,

I have seen nothing but tested, checked results from Doug if that is who you are alluding to. I also have never seen him do anything but post results of his testing. Not sure how you would brand him with "self proclaimed Einstein".

I for one appreciate all the testing he's done, thanks Doug!

Feeling a bit churlish this morning, H? Doug (if that's who you are referring to) has been nothing but meticulous in the presentation of his lubricant testing.
