Default Can my F100 Tow a 928?

On a 4wheel autotransport .... I'm thinking maybe it's too gutless and worse, too light in the rear? 1972 F100 302V8.

You're probably right. Not enough ponies. Should be at least a 3/4 ton rating otherwise you may be looking at a blown tranny and fries brakes not to mention you could probably push the trailer faster. Take a look at todays posting "Red Sled For Sale" could be just what your looking for.

Hey H,

I'm not sure, but I think you might need an F350.. Reason being, I looked at renting a car trailer to hitch to the F250 Xtra Cab Diesel, and the U-haul site said it was too light to pull the 928 and the trailer. Maybe if you added a couple of cement blocks in the bed of the F100, and make that a HO 302 with 400 lb/ft, it should work.... Now, I could suggest putting a KB kit on a Mustang Motor and bolting it into your F100, but I have held my tongue to date....!

I'm contemplating a trailer puller as well (one that will pull the shark without much fussing.) I think an F350 Diesel Xtra Cab is adequate, then I could get a gooseneck trailer... Then I think I could get an old Range Rover LWB, pitch in a new 6.0L from an Escalade/Hummer etc. (GM Vortec) bolt on a KB Blower, and have a flying brick to pull a regular 24ft enclosed trailer...

Decisions....

Then I think... Do I really have time to go messing around with another project when the 6 liter shark motor is not even done yet... I think I need to be shot.... I have mental tinkering disease and definitely not enough time at the moment...

What is the towing capacity of the F100? And how far are you towing? My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee towed my S4 on a flatbed trailer from Sacramento, CA to Washington DC with no problems - the tongue weight was a little much, but as long as I kept it under 65 I had no issues. 235 HP, 6500 lb towing capacity.

The typical rental car hauler trailer is a very heavy unit because they know people are going to do stupid things and grossly overload it. Your little Ford is a pretty wimpy truck with a car engine and transmission poor brakes as I recall. While in college I sold Ford cars/trucks 1968-1969 and the 302 trucks very hard to sell because the engine looked lost when you opened the hood

I am towing mine to the shop tomorrow, trailer ~ 2000ib + the 928 that is one heavy load even with electric trailer brakes. Might be better off using your AAA membership to get it towed to your destination of choice.

Actually was a neat job at age 20,21 flexible hours , free demo usually a 428 Cobra jet Mustang or Fairlane and pretty decent money. And an opportunity to learn a great deal about human nature, business and management.

Also be careful with the Uhaul trailer - it's a little narrow. The rims on my car rubbed against the metal on both sides.

My cousin tows his 20-something foot race trailer with a stock Dodge 1500 with its bed loaded with spare parts. That's more truck than you have, but he carries a lot more than just a 928 (or in his case an RX-7).

Oh come on-

What matters more with a tow-vehicle is the weight of the vehicle itself. That's a stability thing; my 928 has 330 horsepower...which would seem to indicate that it could tow a huge Airstream if I wanted. The reality is that the gearing isn't cool and the package wouldn't be stable- the "silver bullet" would throw the car around in a panic stop.

I had a '66 Ford F100 that I used for airport duty here in Orlando; It sat at the employee lot while I was out flying. The truck's previous owner drove it all over the United States, towing his Piper Cub and its sub assemblies and a trailor with an avgas tank. According to him, the 240 cubic-inch/ 4.0 liter inline six with all of 129 horsepower had no trouble moving the 5500 lb truck and probably 3500 lb trailer....courtesy of a set of decent gears on the rear end.

Lets see the heavist 928's weigh around 3600lbs + a trailer (??? 1500??) so thats about 5100lbs....so anything with a tow rating above say 5500lbs should be fine? It seems a heavy duty diesel with a tow rating of say 14,000+lbs is a bit overkill for a 928?

When I bought my 928, I towed it on a car dolly from Boston, Mass. to Cambridge, Ontario with an ’87 Dodge Ram, 6 cylinder 4 speed manual. It was Ok, but not the best combination for the job. The truck could have used 2 more cylinders and an automatic transmission. I remember that it was necessary too look way ahead on the road. If there was a hill coming, I had to get a good momentum in order to get to the top at a reasonable speed. It was fun, but next time I would use at least a V8 ½ ton with and auto trans. for towing a 928.
