Andrew,

If you have everything apart, how bout an S4 upgrade?
Here are before/after shots on the 79.

I still need to paint the hats as they now have some rust spots on them. They'll be a dark color (charcoal or black) to simulate a 2 piece had at a glance.
I also painted my dust shield black to match the new front ones I bought.
Have fun!

GOD DAMN!!!!! Those look sweet. But I also like the doily look.... hmmmmmmmmmm. Decisions decisions.

I think the Big Red upgrade is gonna cost about $900-$1000 for all 4 corners. That's a lot cha-ching to make people think you have a big *****. And since I'm married, I don't need to advertise. SO I think I'll paint what I have (brakes... not *****) and I can always upgrade later.

Painting the splash shiled looks awesome. really cleans it up. I'm definatrely doing that!

Andy, here's the picture of my caliper in silver. Used high temp paint in a spray can. It's starting to collect brake dust, but it seemed to wipe off OK.

Thanks for posting that Richard. Unfortunately, while the silver looks better than what I have, it looks too much like stock plated calipers you see on every-day cars. I need something special.

So I have decided... I AM GOING TO USE DOILEY PAINT!

(Anyone have a souce?)

I'll update as soon as I have something to report.

nice pics sharksters!!!

I gave up keeping my wells clean and had them coated in black undercoating... guess I got lazy, although I think they do look a bit nicer w/OEM colors when clean... figured the road kills wouldn't mind...

$900-$1000 for a big red upgrade on all 4??? maybe used... my big brake upgrade cost close to $2k so far(being swapped now, and I'm sure I'll end up needing a bolt or two, labor/etc).... remember, you'll also need those big rotors, pads, spindles/adapters, a fluid flush, new seals on the used S4 calipers($250/both)/or new rear S4 calipers ($250ea min)...

IMO, the real bugger on the used rear S4 stuff is finding just the seals... porsche only sells a complete piston/set of seals for around $27/each! total $220 or so for all 8 rear pistons & seals, but most pistons are usually fine... why? but it's obvious - because they can...

S4 rears only come in black, so you'll still need to add powder coating/whatever if a different color is desired too...

porsche also just upped the pricing on the 993 rotors/big red calipers about $200... fun, fun, fun...

hmmmm, those doilies are starting to look better and better...

I've always said that since the factory prefers a subtle look...so should I.

-Wild colors on your calipers might seem cool, but really....they make these components stick out too much. I painted my calipers a rather plain silver and did the dust shields too. It came out about right: It showed the components without drawing your eye to them.

I used an expensive, hard-to-find paint that requires extensive preparation and an artist to apply: Krylon. Three years later, my calipers still look good. Total cost: $1.98

N!

PS: Leopard skin calipers?

Normy... I think you hit the nail ont he head. Pareto , God rest his soul, was a brilliant man. The pareto principle is alive and well in my heart. For those who don;t know, the Preto principle is commonly referred to as the "80/20" rule. You get 80% of the value for 20% of the price. I hear it can work in reverse, but haven't experienced it yet first hand.

Edit:

Normy... the only skin my calipers will see might be 'coon, rabbit, skunk, deer, squirle, and an ocassional opassum. I don't plan on hitting any leopards. LOL!

Andrew yes, take a look at

www.nittingneedles.com
www.mysewingbasket.com
www.crochetersinternational.org
www.needlepoint.org

You should be able to paint any doilies your heart desires, I even saw paint that matches the hue of your table, and paint that can match your tablecloth.

Oh wait ... you said "doiley" not "doily"

just painted my front shields too, only to find they wouldn't fit w/the bigger brakes - in fact no shields seem to.. too funny... don't forget sensor connectors w/the big red setup - I just discovered they don't match so you have to get/rewire connectors on car to match the new sensors... fun, fun, fun... ***** enlargement? nope, it just looks bigger after my wife took my *****... ha!

Rob,

When I did my Big Reds, I noticed the rotor shield problem and got the bigger GTS shields from 928 Specialists. I just looked at my receipts (April 2002) and saw this:

928.351.084.04 GTS "Big Brake" shield, right $16.76
928.351.083.04 GTS "Big Brake" shield, left $16.76

(click for big version)

For more info, go to:

(my "completed job" big brake photos) (photos from install)

Putting new shields on is a pain in the butt. Wheel hubs have to come off, as you'll see in the photos.

Default add the decals

Add the decals for the S4 look! You can get caliper decal on ebay or pm me for the email address. They come in different colors, easy to apply, then spray a clear caliper paint over the top.
I even got the Audi symbol for the TT. Ed M

I would also agree with painting them silver. I am going to paint mine at some point and I wanted to paint them red or black, but that was before I saw a silver Mercedes Benz E 55 this weekend. It had silver calipers and (very clean) cross drilled rotors. The silver on silver combination looked awesome.

The silver calipers complimented the rotors very well and didnt look out of place as a flashier color would have. Just my 2 cents.
